Sony is planning to enable future versions of its PlayStation gaming console to recognize user gestures and even emotions, according to a company executive. The PlayStation 3 may also incorporate a motion sensor and camera add-on similar to Sony's EyeToy.
Phil Harrison, a vice president at Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), told the Australian Financial Review newspaper that "future generations" of PlayStations will include motion-sensor and camera hardware similar to that found in the EyeToy, a peripheral device for the PlayStation 2. While Harrison didn't mention the PlayStation 3 specifically, his remarks suggest it is likely to incorporate current hardware upon its scheduled launch in 2005.
Consoles such as Sony's PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube are seen as a testing ground for bringing new technologies such as broadband into the home and making them more user-friendly. Consumer electronics companies, software makers and PC makers are looking at ways of linking devices such as gaming consoles, digital video recorders, PCs and televisions. PC companies are also working on alternative ways for people to interact with computers.
Harrison said that later generations of PlayStation consoles will include more-complex motion recognition, allowing users to control games using eye movements, gestures and complex finger movements. He compared these controls to the motion-sensor interfaces depicted in the film "Minority Report."
Sony's Qiro robot, a prototype humanoid robot that the company expects to bring to the market in the relatively near future, also comes with a battery of motion and sound sensors.
Harrison said Sony researchers are developing recognition software for facial expressions that, in tandem with a camera, could sense users' emotions. "The logical next step is to deduce from a person's facial expression and demeanor what their emotional state is," he said. "If you can attach very high-resolution, low-cost video cameras (to computers), you can deduce some quite interesting things about their users."
Harrison envisioned a day where a PlayStation could not only sense a player's emotional reaction to entertainment, but offer advice. "If somebody is watching (a show) and starts to slump back and lose the will to live, (the computer) might suggest some other forms of entertainment," he said.
However, Harrison admits that technology wouldn't show up until the PlayStation 4 at the earliest. "It's within the realm of technical believability today, but it requires a supercomputer to do it," he said.
Matthew Broersma of ZDNet UK reported from London. GameSpot.com's Tor Thorsen contributed to this report.

Motion and emotion engine? Hey, guess what new technologies are gonna become the equivalent of the N64's microphone? My bet is these technologies are used once or twice, and then go the way of console online gaming. It happens, but will hardly dominate the market.
Re: The Coming Age of Playstation 3 and 4's NEW Emotion Engi
I'm more surprised they have a PS4 in development. Isn't there going to be a point in time where graphics can not be improved so that the human eye can recognize it?
Re: ...
bah! we don't need "More power". we have enough, programmers just need to make media to allow for more spcae to get the super realistc @#%$. Enter the matrix damn near had that. If they make things too realistic people won't buy them, games are an escape not an extention of life.
All these gadgets and gizmos are going to be used for the sole purpose of jacking the systems up another hundered. Even then it won't help since after a year when no one wants to pat 450 bucks it will come down to about 200, a price that people are willing to pay.
If you want great games you gotta start all the way back when you write the script. if that's trash your game will be trash it won't matter if you can give yourself the finger or not.
Jim: You ok, Gene?
Gene: Yea. I'll take this over the inside of a spaceship anyday.
Jim: I guess your cherry is officially popped now.

...no.
That's crap. The quality of a game has nothing to do with a good storyline. I think it was Aub that said that back in the day, a sufficient storyline could be someone stold your bannanas and you have to get them back. It didn't affect the quality of games back then, and it doesn't affect the quality of games now.
Re: .
Heh, I still own Hay You Pikachu! with the little microphone. Haven't used it in years, though. I remember that that voice recognition worked surprisingly well. It's too bad that there wasn't really much to do in that game...at all.
Re: .
Can't we just have consoles that play great games with great graphics and gameplay? Why do we have to have all this extra crap? I'll never buy any of that crap unless it becomes absolutely necessary for gameplay.

If I may digress from the conversation a bit, I doubt that console online gaming will die. Like, ever. It's not up to expectations at the moment, but the internet will become more and more vital to everyday life in the future. I think that future consoles will all go the way of the Xbox and be internet-ready right out of the box. I think that Xbox Live and the broadband-only thing hurt it, though. You're not only screwed if you have dial-up but you're also forced to pay for a specific service. I think that interest will increase once accessibility does.
Re: .
story is more than you people give it credit for. If the story wasn't good, you wouldn't want to know what happend as the end. If you can't releate to characters or even find ways to give two shits about them you won't care about all the BS they had to go through.
Online console gaming is low becuause other companies other than MS can't seem to get it right. Most of it is you have to play a fee for each game you want to play online. MS nailed this on the nose. The draw back is they want only boradband to stop lag. If you can use 56k modems you'd be hard pressed to find an online service that allows 2rd party hardware. AOL, COmpuserve, and lots of free ISP's won't allow it.

Re: .
You're so dumb. I'm going to use the aforementioned bananas example here. The story of Donkey Kong Country: you are a monkey, and a giant lizard has stolen your banana hoard. Do I care about what happens at the end? Obviously you eventually beat him and you get your bananas back. I don't create a deep emotional bond with DK and Diddy while playing. But it's fun! I hope you choke.
Re: .
maybe i don't like that kind of game? You call me dumb and hope i choke becuase i don't play the same shit as you? You know what? you can suck, my @#%$, balls, and @#%$.

Re: .
It's not so much what you're saying as how you're saying it. It's not fact, it's an opinion. You look for a good story, some people look for fun gameplay, and still others look only for breathtaking graphics and music. However, to imply that all people think your way, as you were, was what was getting us agitated...I mean...adgitated...I mean....upset.

So, do you only play new RPGs? Keep in mind that classic RPGs don't even create strong emotional bonds. If you call FFVII a classic RPG, I will smack you, because you should have known I was talking about genres. Yes, only new RPGs really create a bond that keeps you coming back. Many other genres of modern games do this to, but it's the gameplay that keeps you coming back then. I suggest you play some more genres. No offense man, no offense.

With Bow let us win Kine, with Bow in battle, with
Bow be victory in our hot encounters,
The Bow brings grief and sorrow to the foeman; armed
With Bow may we subdue all regions.
Close to his ear, as fain to speak, she presses, holding
Her well-loved friend in her embraces;
Strained on the bow, she whispers like a woman -- this
Bow-string that preserves us in the Combat.
