Gender Identity
Where I work, there are a very diverse set of people, in fact, every race is represented there, and there are several homosexuals, bisexuals, and a transsexual. It got me to thinking about gender. When we are born we are born with equipment that is either 0 or 1, penis or vagina, our binary sexuality creates that destinctive duality we recognize as human beings, male and female, however mentally things seem to be different and the older I grow, the more I notice an actual spectrum of gender, between exteme masculinity to absolute feminity. In some cases the mental identification of gender conflicts with the biological one, and these people find themselves confused in life about themselves, some end up becoming gay, while other go the drastic extremes of undergoing hormone therapy and even plastic surgery to become more masculine or feminine physically.
Myself as I've grown older I've come to terms with my own position on the spectrum, I'm male, however I do retain a lot of mannerisms and mental processes of a female, but I'm still aroused by femininity, however I would also probably have not much issue if I was born a girl instead of a guy, and could transition myself to this role very easily. I can't imagine a lot of other guys could say the same.
Now this brings up the question, how Male or Female are you?
I almost want to apply a scale on this for example.
Someone could be 75% Male, 25% Female mentally, and be a male physically.
or
Someone could be 20% Male, and 80% Female mentally, and be male physically, which would cause them to be inherantly different than the previous example.
The same would hold true for a female who is
40% Female, 60% Male.
90% Female, 10% Male.
Feel free to expand on this line of discussion and perhaps evaluate yourself honestly to compare yourself and describe your own gender identity.

I've lately been thinking sexual identity is more than just one continuum from A to B and closer to, for example, that map of colors you can bring up on programs like MSPaint, where each different hex value is each different sexual orientation. I don't doubt that it's even more complicated than that, like some kind of 3-dimensional distribution I wouldn't have a clue how to map out.
Re: Gender Identity
THAT, is a very interesting observation, Mystere.
This reminds me of the theoretical essay I wrote several years ago on emotional colors, and how personalities could relate to colors, I hadn't figured in gender identity at that time, but it puts a new spin on the idea.
Re: Gender Identity
Despite the fact that I mow the lawn, swear like a truck driver, loudly mouth off on occassion, wear work boots, I have to say I have no confusion or doubt at all whatsoever that I am 100% girl! I've never felt masculine in any way, never felt attracted to another girl, and never wanted to be a guy (except for those days when I had to do dishes every night and my bros only had to take out the trash once a week!)
I do not act like a soft and gentle little buttercup. But there's not so much as an iota of doubt in my head. I have always been, am now, and always will be a lady right down to my painted (lavendar-pearl) toe-nails!
Re: Gender Identity
I love that the people who have transgender operations have a year of psychiatric analysis to see whether they're sane. As if you could be sane and want to have your dork cut off.
What if I said my arm was possessed by the devil, and I was just born with a possessed arm. Would they chop it off for me? It's rubbish.
Re: Gender Identity
Hey, those boy-to-girl operations are not about cutting it off, it's about turning it inside out. It's pretty gruesome.
OK, here's a quick and dirty graphic on how OldManToby thinks gender identity maps out across humanity. Remember, I don't believe in artificial boundaries but there are physiological factors that can push you towards a statistical mean for one gender or another.
See, we all have a place on this curve and all points are valid.
Re: .
Hey, man. I'm not some "gotta put up a macho front" kinda guy. I'm actually very sensitive and considerate. In fact, I'm on my way now to a feminist march for stopping sexual violence against women. Time to suit up.
Re: .
To label certain actions or feelings or whatnot as being masculine or feminine just doesn't seem right to me. I am a guy, 100%. But... there may be certain feelings I have on certain subjects or certain actions I do that most people may associate with being feminine. But, I am a guy. So, I just don't think it can work that way, trying to give yourself a percentage of masculinity and feminitiy.
I even feel this way in regard to homosexuals. Sure, a lot of things they do or a lot of ways they act or how they feel may be associated with the female sex, but the fact of the matter is they're guys.
