Global Warming
As it were, I've taken a mental note, as time has passed at a persistant trends of weather change, and based upon my own experience I have to say that during my life "something" is changing about the weather and it seems like ever so slightly it gets hotter and hotter.
Now since I first logged onto the internet I've periodically read the usual Scientist Associated Press reports about glaciers melting and parts of Antartica, and most recently the last large Arctic (North Pole) Ice Shelf finally breaking, and well with little fanfare I highly doubt few people aside from my self have been paying attention to this whole warming thing, because it seems to be completely off the radar for most of the countries in the world, and you virtually never hear about it spoken between politicians if at all ever.
You know, I just as well could care less if I noticed no changes, however, I'll say this, since I was a wee one, weather in Florida where I lived has changed. When I was a kid we usually got our first cold front in September, and it brought us some upper 50's at night. By the time I was a teenager, It started moving into October before we would get the cold front (Even in my Journal I noted the date the weather got cooler) and now It's late October, and we have yet to see the significant temperature drop. Today it was 91 degrees with 78% humidity, at least that's what my thermometer said. Like summer never ended. The weather man said that a cold front was coming our way but that it won't make it here and stall just drop some rain and no significant temperature change.
Okay, so what, you say. Well, here's another interesting tidbit from the local newspaper. I was reading an article about Egmont Key, where the old Fort and Lighthouse is, funny thing is, the island is gradually disappearing under the water. Parts of the fort are now under a foot or less of water at high tide, when those parts were once exposed on dry land during 19th Century and into the 20th. They've had to pay for sand to be pileled up to create dunes so that the whole island doesn't just become flooded.
And my father told me, that a local park near the water where he used to go called Abercrombie park in the late 1960's, he used to be able to walk about 200 feet further from the current shoreline.
The other day I read an article about glaciers in Chile in the southern hemisphere melting, and possibly adding 2/1000th of foot of sea level to the oceans, however if you combine the melting of all land based high altitude glaciers and the two arctic poles, well, um, doesn't this raise a red flag to ANYONE? I mean, there are a lot of places in this world that are very close to the shoreline, and many of the world's cities could be innundated by the end of this century.
Any thoughts on Global Warming, or any other personal observations?

It'll beat the hell out of shoveling snow and freezing my ass off all winter.

Re: Global Warming
Yes, for an avid snowmobiler like myself I have notice a significant difference in the cold winters and the amount of snow altogether. I happen to like Winter more than summer and I can tell you its becoming more of a pain in the ass every year to keep a decent ice pond in my backyard for Hockey. The weather is usually too warm to keep a nice surface.
Re: Global Warming
Well I Googlized "Evidence of Global Warming" and came up with this site which isn't to long but explains all the things that are melting and how the rate of melting is pretty much increasing faster over time.
Global Warming might have something to do with all the crazy weather as well, like the weird droughts and floods, and winds, and intense hurricanes, and wildfires that happen. This year was a record year for even Florida on Rain, so many areas were flooded out.
Re: Global Warming
Well, while I haven't noticed the difference (since I've never stayed in one state for more than 7 years), the heat is getting ridiculous. It's the middle of October, and we're suffering 100-105 degree heat.
And is there really anything we can do to stop global warming? It's been a problem for years, and we still haven't really done anything to stop it.
Re: Global Warming
Wow. It was in the 30's here last Thursday.

What sucks about it being hotter longer here in FLorida is my electric bill is more expensive because of the Air Conditioner. I usually have never had to turn it on in October, and my Electric Bill last year was cheaper than this year cause there were more cool days. But at least I don't have to deal with expensive bills in the summer and winter like up north, cause you guys have like gas or oil delivery. Hey now that I think about it, my parents house that I used to live in had this oil furnace in it, but we didn't use it that much while I was living there, and by the time I moved out, I think maybe we used it twice a year during January or February maybe. It makes me think, since the house was built during the late 40's and they put an oil furnace in there, it must have gotten colder during the winter back then, that's why they used them in the houses.
Re: Global Warming
In the land of Minnesota, the temps have been going from like 75 to below 30 in the last week. Crazy fluctuations, but it's ALWAYS like this. I'm not a big buyer of Global Warming. Sure it's happening, that's undeniable, but I don't think effects are as bold as people seem to think they are just because we've had a warm streak of years. We haven't broken that many heat records yet.

Re: Global Warming
Appreciate the warmth, because suposedly we're in a "warm" period of earth history, in-between ice ages. While i'll admit humans are making it heat up faster, i'm guessing most of it is media hype. I mean hell, the climate on Earth is always changing.
Re: Global Warming
My biology teacher last year talked about global warming a lot, but more along the lines of the mass extinction of plants and animals that could occur. I think it was just a 5 degree warming that could start this.

Re: Global Warming
I can't say I've noticed all that much where I live, just the gradual shortening of the cool weather, and the what would seem to be rising water. My house is a few feet above sea level, as I am less than a Mile from the shoreline, so I figure by the time I die my house will be waterfront property and thus worth a million bucks, ha! Then again, maybe not.
Re: Global Warming
I've noticed it's always the people who live in cold areas that don't care about global warming. Global warming might seem to not be a big problem, but it really is. Many people who don't think about it deeply enough or don't really have enough knowledge think that since the Earth's temp fluctuates over time, that this is not a problem. I admit that I am no scientist yet, but a temperature change this great in this short a period of time is dramatic considering the amount of time that usually seperates ice ages. And yeah, small temperature changes can wreck havoc on the environment. Certain species might die out in some areas and move to others, while others remain relatively the same. Species that weren't meant to co-exist will, and that will be just one exacerbation of the problem. Most species that aren't supposed to live together won't be able to. Whatever rare life exists at the poles (lichens and such) will become extinct very quickly, and those closer to home will eventually as well. Add to this the problems of overpopulation, expanding human habitation, direct consistent destruction of the environment by humans, overconsumption, and pollution, and you have yourself more than just one recipe for disaster. VG, if you think that there will be many people around in 100 years to buy your house, more power to you.
Oh, but here's some [Sarcasm]good news.[/Sarcasm] Congress will seen be voting on a [Sarcasm]drastic[/Sarcasm] reduction of green-house pollutants of 1.8% that will go into effect in 5-7 years. Of course, even that has a high chance of failure.
BTW, I live in California. Back when I was a kid, we used to have days when we were highly advised to stay indoors because of heavy air pollution. This doesn't mean we were kept from school, though, as school IS indoors... Anyway, we don't do that anymore, and the problem is most likely worse than then.

The Bow brings grief and sorrow to the foeman; armed
With Bow may we subdue all regions.

Strained on the bow, she whispers like a woman -- this
