Alright, let me tell you something about California: The whole place catches on fire. Whether you're middle-class or upper-class, you probably live near something very flammable. Whether it's a forest that drops a @#%$-load of pine needles, or chaparal or coastal sage, people of various economic classes live there. I have a field just a block down from my house that the fire department cuts every year or so to keep it from catching a dozen or more houses on fire if it does ever go up. I used to take my bike down there and ride around. It's not all that big or anything, though.
See, fire is a natural part of pretty much every California ecosystem. I think pine cones open up and disperse their seeds when they are heated so that they can take advantage of the freed-up light and the plentiful ashes on the ground, and here in the lower regions, fires recycle wooded areas into grasslands, which become eventually becomes chaparal, and wooded area again. This keeps various species cycling throughout the ecosystem. However, humans more than a century ago started putting out these fires because they didn't understand them. Biomass collected for a much longer period of time, and instead of burning in patches of old shrubs or trees or grass exclusively, ALL of California became old enough to burn. This pretty much threw off their balance and caused them to be much, much larger when they did catch. This wasn't an intentional human error, though.
Anyway, that's why our wildfires are so big now: because our fire departments put them out. Yeah, it's actually true. If they only put out fires that got near houses, it would be different, but with the situation we've gotten ourselves into, it would be difficult. This is because any fires that do start have a whole lot of biomass to feed on and Santa Ana winds to push them. Thus, houses that are anywhere near large, open areas are subject to wildfires. Most people build their mansions in the mountains or in the middle of Hollywood. However, what usually burns in our wildfires is our shrubs and grasses. That's why it's not exclusively mansions that burn.

Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
What you just described happened here (BC) this summer too, we had a huge fire in the interior that destroyed thousands of homes because we tried to "fix" it before. There was lots of coverage of it and after seeing the remains of the place I can't imagine that happening to me. Once again I hope VGX and his property are subject to an act of god, if you will...
Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
I totally agree about the bad things happening, that's not good, none of it is, but there is this part of me that is satisfied when I see some plastic surgeon or corporate tycoon's house go up in flames.
I am not at all satisfied that people have to die, or that unfortuantely ordinary working people will lose everything they've worked for in their lives, that's a damn shame right there. Hopefully the community will surround these folks and help them out.
Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
For crying out loud, I don't want anyone to get the idea that I'm a sadistic scumbag that pleasures in the torture of other people, I just dislike greedy people who don't give back to society. I'm truly sorry if I came off as being such an aweful person, that's not my intent.
Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
Let me rephrase that then, - Greedy wealthy people who are selfish and have more than they would ever need to live on and do everything possible to capitalize on the misfortune of others or do not respect the efforts of average working class people.

Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
1600 homes. Yikes. And guess what? A good third of the sky here is now smoke. I dunno what the chances of the fires entering the valley are but I heard that they estimate one to two weeks before they can put the fires down. Not to overdramatize, but hey, I figure it could happen between now and then. But I'm sure they could keep it away from the homes...
So anyone else close to the action?
Justice? Who asks for justice? We make our own justice. We make it here...win or die. Let us not rail about justice as long as we have arms and the freedom to use them.

Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
I was for a while, but the fire and my house are seperated by several streets and many walls along the way, so there's no real danger. For a while here, if you'd look South at the Sun, it would look red through the smoke. Not just a tiny bit red, I mean RED... at noon. Now, it's just orange most of the day.

Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
Well, when fires this big go on, EVERYONE suffers.
I live near enough to see the fires through the upstairs window, but not near enough to be in any actual danger. But we all had to deal with the smoke and ash coming from them. The smoke made the sky a horrible brown since last Friday (the sky is red at sunrise...it's seriously RED, it was so creepy), and the sky's snowing ash. The smoke was bad enough that it forced our school to stop all outside activities, including a varsity football game that got postponed 'til November. It may not seem like much typed out, but when you see it...it feels like armageddon. Everything's in an orange hue, and the sun is this dark orange orb in the sky. The ash collects in streaks of black and white everywhere you go, and it still falls. The smoke smells awful and it was bad enough to make my heart ache. No one goes outside because the air quality is so unhealthy. It's really creepy.
But, the sky started to clear just yesterday afternoon, and I forgot how pretty a blue sky was. It started to rain here, and everyone's welcoming it with a warm embrace, but there's the aspect of mudslides that we have to worry about now.
Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
Yes, with so much destroyed folliage, MANY mudslides WILL happen...
On a lighter note, the sky the last two days here were incredible. I love the Santa Anna winds because they renew the beauty of my area for 2 weeks or so of the year, and because wind truly speaks to my spirit.

Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
Yikes! I guess seeing part of the sky darker really ain't that big of a deal (but hey, I've never been near any sort of fire of this magnitude, being from the east and all ). Sounds like you guys have it much worse.
Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
No, no, I meant that my area WAS brown with a red sun, but now all of that is gone and it looks good thanks to the Santa Annas. Was bad, now good.

Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
Excuse my non-Californian ignorance, but aren't the Santa Anas what make fires spread so quickly in the first place?
Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
Yes, but now that they are out in my area, they blow away all the smog and smoke.

Re: I know it's insensitive, but...
The sad thing is, there may come a day when people will yearn to see the sky again, a time when due to apathy humans polluted the atmosphere to such an extent all that can be seen is smoke, ash, and pollution. Let's hope we get off of fossil fuels in the 21st century, or in the 22nd the Earth will be a decrepid wasteland of overpopulation, deforestation, desertification, and pollution throughout the sea, air, and land. Mind you naturally it will cleanse itself, that is after humans go extinct or leave this planet, or we clean ourselves up. Who the hell knows, but hopefully it doesn't come to that.
