I just got through watching a late night program on PBS, a set of Nova episodes on "The Elegant Universe" that does an excellent job of explaining the old and established understanding of physics and quantum mechanics with the most recent discoveries and theories related to string theory, higher dimensions, and alternate universes. Very cool stuff, and should be about easy for average people to understand they way they explain and provide examples of everything in understandable terms. Check this out if you want to at least say that you have a general understanding of what the smartest minds on the planet have come up with so far.

"Interacting with Earth's magnetic field, the high-energy solar winds produced by a CME often increase night displays of the northern and southern lights."
I noticed that. They've been huge, and all kinds of colors this year.

I can't remember the last time it was sunny here. I swear, if I didn't know better I'd swear I had moved to England.
Re: Toby's location
Humph. Well, that's weird. You know this stumps me, from what I know about solar activity, all this odd activity is well, an anomaly. So, this begs to ask the question, what is causing it? I seriously hope my astronomical fantasy of a interstellar gravity event as bad as a black hole approaching our solar system isn't true cause if it is, we're all in for it. The Mayans ended time at December 23, 2012 I think, well, if some kind of disaster was happening with the sun or something up with the solar system it wouldn't just happen overnight, more like over so many years things would get progressively worse until...the end. Well so far all these solar flares and coronal ejections haven't done too much to Earth, luckily cause of our magnetic field, thank goodness Earth is a big enough rock filled with enough heavy elements and mass to create magnetic field. If it wasn't here, we would likely be bombarded by cumulatively leathal doses of radiation from our own sun and no life as we know it would sustain here, for sure humans probably wouldn't have evolved.
If odd electromagnetic effects from this very powerful ejection mess up our electrical grids, maybe people will take a big notice, I think the only people watching this are scientists, and maybe it will amount to not a damn thing, but I would just stay moderately concerned about what's up with the sun. Although your chances of getting injured or killed from riding in a car is a lot higher, I think, than the remote chance the sun melts you or irradiates you.
Re: Toby's location
I think our magnetic fields pretty much just keep us safe from the ionic hazzards of solar wind; our atmosphere takes care of radiation. But yeah, all this is strange, but it won't have a really big affect on us.
