Is it just me, or are all these quotes in the quotes things beginning to look like a mirror trick?

I'm still gonna stick to Metallica. The songs practically describe what's going on in my life. In the past day, my life has been described by "Fade to Black," "Nothing Else Matters," and "Unforgiven".

Bleh. "I/you can relate to it" should never be a reason to like a band. That's what kids who listen to nothing but emo or nu-metal say.

I listen to them because I like the music. It was later on that I realized that the music described the shit going on in my life.

Agreed totally.
"It speaks to me about my life", "It's no longer relevant", and such things are all completely unfathomable statements to me. I dunno how people can think about music like this.

Again, the main reason I listen to it is that I like the actual music. And it doesn't really "speak to me about my life," it just kinda says the EXACT shit that's happening in my life. But I only discovered that today. I like the music for the music.

Then again, I always sing along when Morrissey goes, "It says nothing to me about myy life/Haaanngggggggg-a the blessed Deejayyy" etc.

I used to really like the Backstreet Boys, they used to speak to my heart man. Like, I could really feel where they were coming from.
Now I can't listen to them anymore, their music has no bearing on who I am, I can't relate. I feel so jaded.

Oh, okay. I agree, too. I know someone who listens to Christian rock because she loves God or something like that... I dunno about the rest of you, but I just can't fuckin handle Christian rock.

I think it's great when people can write lyrics that really speak profoundly to your emotions... tough thing to do. Look at Pete Townshend... could write songs (and in one case an album which happens to consistently be my favorite record of all time, see my avatar, and if you're cool you recognize it) about teenagehood that make you feel like you're still there and capture that awkwardness perfectly... but when it actually sounds like some teenager's diary entry, what's the point except if you're joining in the awkwardness like a self-pitying teen would?

I've always wanted to like Christian rock, to demonstrate my claims that I a.) don't care about lyrics, b.) don't care about the people behind the music, only the music itself -- but they make it so fucking hard by sucking so damn much.

I've not heard of the Explorers.
I may have to check them out next time I am in a moderately large city/town and not this little hell hole.

yeah, what's neat is that the dude was like almost 30 when he wrote that, huh
though it doesn't beat Chuck Berry, who was past 30 when he wrote some of his best teen lyrics
at any rate, I'd rather people speak to my emotions with melodies rather than words, but words can be all right. Generally, though, I like my lyrics along a symbolist vein, a la Dylan or whatnot

It's basically Manzanera and MacKay going in the opposite direction from 801: new-wave pop
like I said, I've only heard the one track, which is great (cheesy, but, well, y'know), so I dunno what to think in general
edit: never heard the brought low

Well, in general I couldn't care less if someone's lyrics suck (I'll point out, but it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the music), but if they do, they should probably collaborate with someone who can write decent ones, instead of going it alone
but people are so often too egotistical these days
also, most people can't tell when their lyrics suck, haha

I wish there were an international lyric auditor who everyone had to send their lyrics to for approval before they were allowed to sing them. He'd review them and sometimes write back:
"REJECTED. Sorry, emo band, you don't know it yet, but these suck. You are hereby prohibited from writing any more lyrics until you are old enough to drink.
Best wishes,
International Lyric Auditor."

That's actually a good idea. I still think that people should have to get clearance before having children, too. There'd be a fuck of a lot less stupid people. And ugly people. And VGX would never have little Gamer X's.
Not like he ever will.

heh... I'm a firm believer in being able to inject lots of feeling into lyrics that weren't anything special to begin with though, like a lot of blues... too bad that gets misdirected these days and everyone starts thinking that if you try to sound all emotional, and croon up your diary entry, it means anything. Bleh.

Sounds pretty good. I'll certainly look for some Explorers.
The Brought Low are somewhat like... The Kings of Leon I suppose. Southern tinged rock.

Actually my musical knowledge is quite lacking so I'd be hard pressed to come up with anything off the top of my head that fit that category.
I've only recently developed a strong interest in music.
As for the Kingsbury Manx, sometimes I really enjoy them, and other times I can't stand listening to them. It's a mixed bag of sorts.

oh...that....I remember now. hmmm Linkin Park is a bit arrogant thinking they are the sole beginning of a new genre...In my opinion there's nothing metal about it, it sounds like grundge but harder and heavier with techno

Definitely not my area of expertise, but it appears to be metal, of a sort, that mixes in moderate to large doses of electronic musics and hip-hop (or, if not hip-hop, then at least a rap-equivalent vocal style). Plus, it seems, angst.
Easily considered the least hip of all musical genres, largely because it seems to be favored by clueless suburban white kids (let's say, the modern equivalent of the audience for 70s FM) - but that's mostly just bigotry, as far as I can tell. None of it really seems that bad at all, though I know nothing about it.

hahaha, thanks alex...I forgot mentioning the hip-hop element...hmmm how do they get "metal" out of that?? Metal is associated with Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer and numerous other bands...I don't like Linkin Park saying that their music is the new type of metal...Their songs with the basic drum and guitar scores are far too simplistic....the added sound of the hip-hop, techno and whatever don't help it for the better.
