Outside of SAW 1/2 and 26 Mixes for Cash, it's all drill and bass basicly for Aphex. There's exceptions, but yeah

Lyrics. Yeah, they're not easy to write, I don't bother. Always made instrumental music, and wouldn't change that even if I could sing any more.

My friend is the frontman for a local band, and his lyrics are amazing. He'll literally be told by the band to write a song during a jam session, and he'll have something done within 10 minutes. They'll play the music, he'll twiddle the dials a little bit, and then show them a complete song. He's won awards for his lyrics, too, at several local Battle of the Bands competitions. But I'm beating him in Lit at school, so fucking there!

Quote:
No, but considering the fact that 98% of the people are around 5'4, and some are shorter, I get the short end of the stick. Or the tall end. How can there even be a short/tall end of a stick?

5'4"? Where do you live, Malaysia? Actually, a more accurate question is how old are you? If you're 5'11" in your early teens, you're either going to be huge or you won't grow anymore. At all. I know a guy who reached 5'8" in primary school, then didn't grow another inch. It's usually the short kids in primary school that end up being monsters.

For the record, I'm 5'10" and will probably finish up around 6'1".

I Care Because You Do was fairly engaging, melodically. Also, the singles from that period. On, Donkey Rhubarb and the other one.

A SAW 3 would kick ass.

And my parents keep telling me that I'll stop growing soon. I find it funny that they have to keep buying me new pants every couple of weeks.

Edit: Shirts are taken care of. I wear my dad's shirts. My dad's not even three inches taller than me. And he's supposed to be three inches shorter than me eventually. Poor short old dad.

Why don't they just buy massive pants, and tell you'll grow into them? Isn't that what every single parent on the planet does?

Ironicly, if you asked my to name my favorite albums, I woudn't have very many Aphex on there....the only Aphex album that I think is consistent enough is The Ventolin Remixes.

Knowing RDJ's personality, he probably won't ever make one for that very reason.

They keep thinking I'll stop growing. Laughing

In fact, my pants are the same length as my dad's pants. I just have a smaller waist. In fact, due to the fact that I'm incredibly slim and ripped for someone who's spent the past year sitting on his ass and eating donuts, they don't make pants that fit me perfectly. They always expect me to either be shorter or fatter.

Yeah, some people can just pen song after song of amazing stuff and never get tired. There are others, who are total geniuses at crafting the music itself, but struggle to put together one song, which usually sucks. It's weird.

The average subject matter you get in most songs wears down on my patience a bit after a while, hence my penchant for instrumentals.

Why me?
It isn't fair...
Love left me in the lurch
I miss the smell of her hair

I can't take this anymore
I'm starting to go insane
Please, oh please ooooh
Come back to me Jane

Speaking of common themes in songs, does this sound familiar?

Seriously? I can't penetrate any of them, much less the whole collection.

I found SAW pretty damn consistent. No filler, nothing too difficult. If the second volume was just one disc long, it probably would have been the same.

Wait, are you treating "song" to mean lyrics here, or what? Otherwise I'm not getting what you're talking 'bout

This proves my point about the randomness. We're back to music. What'll we be discussing next, what color underwear we're wearing?

[PLEASE NOTE: THAT WAS A BAD ATTEMPT AT A JOKE. PLEASE DO NOT MENTION YOUR UNDERWEAR.]

Bleh. I'm struggling with songwriting myself... just the lyrics part. I've actually got a battle of the bands kind of thing coming up in two days and we banged out a song for it today, but I don't have any lyrics and I have no idea where to start. It shouldn't be this hard, it doesn't have to be poetry... I think my mind's been tainted with the horrendously bad lyrics of music lately (especially of all the Avril clones, but a lot of post-grunge type stuff too)...

do to Dylan's website. He has all his lyrics to all his songs. Read a bunch and it'll get you in more of a lyric-writing mood, probably.

Start with a single line, and then spin it into a story

I always had a hard time coming up with stuff; those are always good tricks. I never write lyrics anyway, though. Never wrote melodies either until I learned how to write them down (i.e. recently). Why am I even talking.

It's nothing too fancy, 12 bar blues fast rocker kind of thing, with a modified turnaround so that it's clearly a new song... various elements of the Who and Van Halen stolen and spliced in... if I need some at the last minute I can throw together a bluesomatic cliche fest anyway though, no-one in the highschool auditorium with an incompetent sound crew is going to know the difference anyway.

I think if I come within 100 feet of Dylan I'll get depressed about how I'll never be able to do that and be completely unproductive for a month... not looking for anything too fancy, though I will be looking for something too fancy once I flex my lyrical muscles a little more.

I guess we're in that state where we've played enough of other peoples' material to be a solid band and now we're looking to do our own and conquer the world... this is harder than it should be.

You should go for some simpler Dylan - much more approachable, but equally mind-freshening and lyric-mood-putting-you-in-like

Not a bad idea... but what I actually think I need is to have someone smack me until I stop being so insecure about coming off as sophomoric or preachy, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that you'll sound insincere somehow when you get stuck on that...

No one else in the band up to the task?

Like I said, you could always steal stuff or take drugs. Damn near every band I've played in did it, and got away with it. It's cheap and miserable, but hell, it's what college rock bands are good for.

Nah, I'm basically the director of the whole operation, so I get to be the control freak... not that I wouldn't love some initiative that turned out to be good, but no, none of us are budding poets.

You should post them here and I'll run you down for being sophomoric/preachy if you are, or something

The latter is a pretty terrible idea for lyric-writing, I think

Go the whole nine yards.

Scavenge weblogs and find the worst angst-poems you can find, and convert them into a song. The highschool students will love you for it.

Writing lyrics while under the influence, I agree, but I've people unlock new, long-term creative abilities using them. Then again, it's risky business.

Walking at night is where I find most of my ideas. I guess because I live in fairly pleasant and peaceful surroundings, so I don't know if where you live it'll be a the same, or if it's an invitation to be gang-raped. A quite place outside is generally a good place to start, though.

Long-term, yeah, agreed. Well, acid, anyway, I dunno about any of the others.

Walking is definitely a good thing. I can't think at all unless I'm walking.

Walking late at night is good. I live in a pretty safe neighbourhood as well, and I like to get out of the house and go for a stroll every now and then. There are, however, suburbs I wouldn't go near, for fear of being ass-raped by a group of surly drunken pricks. I remember me and three friends were walking through one such suburb, when these guys approached us with knives. We just turned and ran, and thankfully these thugs were either too drunk or too unfit to keep up with us. You have no idea how unsafe I felt that night, despite the 4 locks it would have taken someone to break to get to me. Not to mention the baseball bat beside my bed.

I can't believe I missed this thread.

Hey now, I usually write off 70% of the bland collegate rock/emo that Ninjew listens to (love man, love), but Dispatch rocks hardcore. Probably because I was listening to them before he was.

Come on Snip, I'm begging you to get back into this for my benefit. You can start with mauling moe.

Ah, so this thread was temporarily brought back from the dead? It's gone over everything from height to music. We should keep it alive just for discussing shit so pointless that it can't be discussed in the other "pointless shit" threads.
