Well, since this is lying at the bottom, lets start talking about it. I suppose I can't contribute quite yet, but those of you who have read it can.

Don't know how he got it, don't know where he got it, haven't even seen it yet. Has Dog got some special connections somewhere higher or what? ;-)

No special connections, I just happen to live in Norwich, UK.

They've got it in Waterstone's, Ottaker's, Kulture Shock, blimmin' everywhere...

Well, I'm getting it for my birthday, so when I get it and have read it, I will contribute my opinion.

I have begun reading this book and am having VERY mixed emotions. While the story itself is entertaining, I find that I am dissappointed that Brian and Kevin have chosen to ignore the DUNE ENCYCLOPEDIA and instead opted to re-write the histories. In a letter posted to the dunenovels.com site, they sited their reasons as 'using my father's original notes, instead of the derivative DUNE ENCYCLOPEDIA" (this is not a direct quote, but it hits the main points.)

One way to lessen the pain is to view the Prequels as taking place in an alternate universe. Yeah...It's a silly thing to do...But it works.

I bought Jihad about three days ago here in houston. I am halfway through the 600 plus pages and I have to say it is pretty enjoyable. I think Brian and Kevin have found a perfect outlet for their lack luster story telling. The setting is 10,000 years before Muad'dib so they have room to add a lot of their own Ideas without damaging the concepts of the universe we all know. It is a little contrite that worm riding was started on accident but it is also true that many of the most important discoveries on this planet were found by accident. I guess all I am trying to say is the setting of Jihad is so far in the past from the original series that Brian and his cohort can make mistakes and people like myself who do not have access to the Dune Encyclopedia will not even notice. I have not been to the board for many months and I am happy to see familiar names(like Vandevere) May you all walk in the shade.

Hmmm... I see what everyone means about the ignoring of the DE by BH and KJA. It still seems a bit silly to me, but there we are.

It bugs me that the DE is still such a bone of contention by both authors and readers alike. I don't see why it can't be republished with a preface explaining the situation behind it, perhaps even fictionalizing it by suggesting it's one of Leto II's pranks...

BTW, I'm studying Marketing at the moment as part of my job, and basically anyone with half a business brain would listen to the public and do their best to give them what they want, rather than what you think they *should* want. If people want the sodding DE re-released then do it, for crying out loud!!!

Ummm, anyway, where was I?

I'm glad the consensus so far is that the BJ is a pretty good stab... It's not FH, but I also think that javman has hit his head on the nail with his comments about the time period.

When's your birthday Nora?

Dog;)

They say that Dune has sold over ten million copies. Why doesn't publisher of DE do the math? (We say "maths" in the uk but "math" sounds better...)

Well, after being down a week from a computer virus, I'm back!

FINALLY!!! THANK GOD, BECAUSE I HAVE THE BJ IN MY HAND AS I SPEAK!!!

I am very happy to say that I have the Butlerian Jihad now. I have read 3 or so chapters, and I am enjoying it. I think it is a bit better than the prequels, but remember, I am only in the beginning.

Welcome back, Nora. You haven't missed much. No one has been posting. Perhaps they are all reading the BJ too? GNT has even resorted to refreshing old posts.
dogsolitude_uk Oct 14th 6:09 AM
Yeah, it's sad really. I'm running out of stuff to write too. Hope people *are* reading the BJ and not just disappearing... that would be nasty...

Hmmm, if only one percent of Dune readers bought the DE that would still be quite a reasonable sum for a bit of SF. I think.

Dog;)

I finished BJ yesterday. I think it is must better than the prelude. But still it could be much better, but Brian and Kevin are going in the right direction, so I'm a optimist. The prelude books were so predictable, but in BJ I found a few things I had not guessed before it happened. That was the best thing in BJ. And Brian and Kevin have aslo made some better characters in the new book, with Xavier as the worst exception, IMO he is just as flat as the most characters from the prelude.
Nora FJ Oct 16th 4:20 PM
Well, today is my birthday! I'm on page 106 of the Jihad and enjoying it.
I agree with DH Danmark. Where I am, Xavier is flat. I like Vorian and Serena though. And Erasmus is an awesome character so far!

Didn't like the prequels very much, but BJ is entertaining stuff. First the Titans and the thinking machines, that's exciting. The origins of some of the Dune features, like worm riding, glow globes and the first steps of space folding, are described in an original way. Yet, it's a bit unconvincing that all these origins, 10,000 years pre-Dune, all take place in the same 18 months covered by BJ. Further, writing style and characters of BH and KJA are still so much more superficial than in FH's books, so that I also have my doubts about their skills to write book 7 (unless they stick very closely to FH's notes).

Maybe a lovely little snippet of info to consider... look for:

Manuel Butler

It's the Butler, Frank Herbert based his Butlerian Jihad on.

The Butlerian Jihad is flat from beginning to end...

"I love you"
He loves her with all of his heart
"He loves me!"

The writers can only convince the reader of the emotion by bringing it in a sterile way. This isn't characterisation, it's annoying to read.
