Dune House Atreides / Comments on Dune: The Butlerian Jihad / Predictable Predictions

Cairon Oct 30th 2:39 PM
This is THE topic to make predictions about the Legends of Dune books.

I predict that Erasmus will die, of course after realizing that humanity really is a diamond in the rough. He will kill himself after he has become too human, or he will be killed by humans for crimes against humanity.

Either way he's dead and the last thoughts racing through his positronic brain will involve how glorious humanity really is.

We'll actually get to see Hectate in the second book. They will search for her to assist them in their battle.

Omnius will blast more probes off into outer space.

Im sorry but Omnius will not blast anymore probes into space. Look at the book again, the probes that omnius sent out were on Giede Prime just before the league of nobles took it back. So before this update of omnius could pass this technology update along it was destroyed. HOWEVER it did manage to fire of a few hundred of these probes so were they went?...... I predidct that the seventh book in the orginal dune series (Which was found complete as a first draft) will show that the unknown force which is destroying the Honnored Matres will be Omnius. Think about it? what else could it be?

There is more than one Omnius, ergo there can be launched more than one omnius probe into outer space. Just because they intercepted a couple of probes in the latest book, doesn't mean that omnius hasn't launched other before or that he will launch some in the future.

The Seventh book, even if Frank Herbert had planned and already written a first draft, it will still lack in quality and it will be plagued by inconsistencies. Remember, pinky and the brain have very greasy fingers...

I also thought that the last book, the seventh book was supposed to be the third book after God Emperor.

Making GEoD the centre, with three books before it and three books after it, it would be logical for the story to actually end in Book Seven. I don't think Frank Herbert planned on a new threat that could be milked like a fat cow, I think Book Seven would adress the enemy with many faces and actually end, with it tying up all loose ends in Heretics and Chapterhouse...

Cairon: "Remember, pinky and the brain have very greasy fingers..." *LOL*

Totally agree on all points there.

I guess i need to read all the dune books then.

I've read House Atreides,Harkonnen,Corrino and also The Butlerian Jihad.

As for the original set i've only read Dune,Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. I have the other 3 on order and still waiting for them to turn up. COME ON AMAZON!!!!!!

There are a lot of points which i do not know anything of and you lot discuss most of these. Until i have read the last 3 i will with hold my view on the faceless enemy!

To add my thoughts on this novel (which I finished this morning at midnight) is that Vorian will definetly face his father one last time and perhaps destroy/kill Agamemmnon... But I agree with what some of you are suggesting that Omnius could in fact be the mysterious enemy the Honoured Matres are running from... I wonder if Piers Harkonnen will come back into the story (he's still alive on Caladan if you read the short story), maybe he's the Harkonnen that betrays the humans...

Leto II, due to his prescient abilities, is the one to be watched for the clues as to what is chasing the Honored Matres at the other end of the Scattering. Leto II states in GEOD (p. 162), "...but few understand the ultimate peril to humankind- that false sense of freedom from responsibility from your own actions." While one is reading GEOD one thinks Leto II is attempting to weed out basic human flaws dating back to prehistoric times (which he is); but beyond the basic psychology, I think he may be hinting that the consequences of humanity's creation of thinking machines before the Butlerian Jihad will come back to destroy the old empire and eventually humanity as a whole. The question, will humanity be able to escape its unconscious self destructive tendancies so as not to ever repeat such dire consequences (which humanity has brought upon itself)? That is, if it can survive the onslaught from the other end of the Scattering...

Think back to Siona's testing by Leto II. There was a bit referring to Humanity being hunted. The hunters seemed to be a wee bit on the mechanical side to me...

Being a stickler for details, I would predict that, to be conisistent with the universe Frank set up, religion will need to be infused more into the story line. A jihad is a religious holy war, and out of the Butlerian Jihad came the basic tenents of, and the eventual creation of the Orange Catholic bible. Unfortunately, I don't know that Brian and Kevin will be as eloquent and enlightening on this subject as Frank. Now, being a stickler, my question to the group, if known, is how long after a throrough atomic destruction will Earth be able to host a conference of religious leaders, the Commission of Ecumenical Translators (C.E.T., appendix II, Dune)?

I think most definitely the seeds sown by the Giedi Prime Omnious is the threat to those of the Scattering. I like the idea of Hectate assisting the humans in the next book. If book 3 is supposed to be the Battle of Corrin, then we should be rid of the known machine threat at the end of the next book, and see the rise in conflict between what will eventually be the Great Houses of the Landsraad and the eventual House Corrino.

Just finished the last book (CHapterhouse) WELL what a funny ending? however it does have me some what intrigued. The old couple are deffo some sort of face dancer which has become more human than the people who made them. They dont seem evil or hostile. another point if the fact that they can see what is happening in the old empire and yet they do not go there to attack the honured matres, so that leads me to the conclusion that they are not the ones hunting the whores? Got tobe machines?

i think that duncan will have a big part to play in the next book (when they decide to use the rough version and publish it)

The only Omnius that had the ability to make drones was the Giedi Prime one. After his destruction, the only ones that could make further ones were probes he fired off that survived the journey (Think about the one the sandworm swallows in BJ... Others lost or otherwise damaged in space, etc...) I don't think it's likely that any further probes were created or built, but I haven't read the originals past CoD yet. I'll keep going as time allows - So busy!

I agree with the mule on the religious idea.

At the end of CH:D it's obvious that Sheeana intends to take advantage of the religion surrounding her who's followers already number beyond billions, maybe even take on the sandtrout skin... God Empress Sheeana.

Or even better, a child of Sheeana and Teg becoming another God Emperor.

The end of the Battle of Corrin is when the Machines are eliminated. The guild has not even been formed. It is close though. the Corrino dinisty has just formed. And indeed, the Atreides and Harkonnen are split.
