House Atreides was a good book in it's own right. It was well written and rather interesting. However, it is unrealistic to expect it to live up to the orginial. Doing so is setting yourself up to be dissapointed. Take it for what it is, not what you think it should be.

Well said, and the same could be said of The Phantom Menace. If the original film had been released now, even with good effects, it would have been buried alive.

well written?
interesting (in it's own right)?
it doesn't have to live up to the original dune, it just has to tell a story with a shred of skill and decency. the writing employed more simple plot devices than an episode of star trek, and it read like rush limbaugh on crack.
the novel would have been *completely* boring had it not had a 6-book series of brilliance to back it up (and even with that it was inconsistent).

Yeah, take away DUNE from House Atreides and you'll have a mediocre book, destined for bargain bins.
