the book bastardized the name "Dune". they should just publish herbert's original notes, because the book was full of unoriginal plot twists and inconsistencies to mix with the extremely poor quality of writing. i was thoroughly disgusted.

Unoriginal plot twists? The original dune was full of those.

like what? everything in the original books carried a unique sense of intricacy of multi-faceted depth that far outweighed any suggestion of repition. there's a difference from incorporating elements of ecology, easter psychology and religion with messianic undertones and ripping off cheese sci-fi to make more cheese sci-fi

If you hated HA so much, save yourself $50.00 and don't buy and bitch about the next two books. I read and liked HA. I've read all of the Dune Books and I am just happy to have more of the Dune Universe to discover. I have also read the Dune Encyclopedia, of all the Dune literature, the Dune encyclopedia is the weakest. I hope Brian Herbert writes as many Dune books as he can.

What plot twists were there in the original Dune? None to my recollection.
The same is true of HA.
A plot twist is something drastic that occurs unexpectedly, eg. Dr. Yueh turning traitor wasn't a plot twist coz it said so from the beginning.
Regardless of how layered the plot got, I don't think there were any twists to speak of.

What your talking about is bad writing. When something drastic occurs with no reason or forshadowing that's just crud. A good plot twist is a developed change in the flow of the story.

No offense i dont want to bash Dune but the Yueh turning traitor incident wasnt a plot twist, nor was it forshadowed in my opinion, if you read the little exerpts from Irulans books etc before each chapter youll come across one from like an encyclopedia. The entry is wellington yueh and it bluntly says "hes is noted as the chief betrayer of duke leto atreides I" (or something to that point).
I agree with Zilla, there were no plot twists by her definition.

I don't think plot twists by Zilla's definition are really that important. In fact I could do without them.

I'm just finishing HA and I agree with Fedaykin. I don't really know why I bought that book. I hesistated for a few weeks after finding it in a bookshop. Finally I read it and sometimes couldn't help but laugh out loud upon the sillines of the plot, but overally it's just saddening. Damn, it's teenage sci-fi. It reminds me of Star Wars books or such. (Most of the characters are teenage, anyway ;) ) There are times, IMO, when the authors show just how wrong do they get from the Dune universe created by Herbert. And the worst thing is how they screwed up BG. When an ornitopter with Mohiam (or some other flying thing, I don't rememer...) almost falls to the ground, she starts to think about God (a Reverend Mother!). There's talk of omens and superstitions. The Kwisatz Mother hires a Feng Shui master to help design a building... Come on. The introductions are supposed to be deep and philosophical, but they simply are plain truisms, at their best. The storyline is packed up with battles, shooting, and such, probably to make it more attractive for the teenage reader. There are unexplainable plot elements (not correlating with the TRUE Dune books) - for example, Vladimir Harkonnen uses a device which makes him immune to the Voice (thus making Mohiam...powerless?). Why didn't anybody use it afterwards?! The book, IMO, shoud rather be treated as fanfiction.

FanFic!
Exactly>>>
That's what I've been trying to say.
House Atreides is good, but as FanFic.
As a novel it holds about as much salt as... The Muppet Babies on Ice.

Just to the topic. I have no idea as to Feydakin's writing abilities, but the natural laws probablity says he is very likely to be a better writer than the two ...
I am not kidding either, this is not just a derogatory remark snatched out of nowhere. I seriously believe that the majority of people could, if they tried, write better than B&K.
