Did anyone truly enjoy reading God Emperor of Dune? Just wondering because i found it utterly boring with no real action till the last chapter (which i loved). however, as a philosophy book i give it an A+ but quite frankly if i wanted to read a philosophy book i would get one from a college library.....

On a better note, the thing i discovered most original about God Emperor of Dune was how Moneo was symbolic of the human race under Leto II's rule, obediant, docile, but with an underlying skin of rebelliosness present in all humans. He was nevertheless a part of Leto's program to develop the human race to fit his Golden Path.

Can anyone tell me there opinions about this, and does the series get better with Heretics of Dune?

Since I treat all Dune books equaly ( at least all the books writen by Frank Herbert ). I'd say that since they are really all one flowing motion of humanity... something can not become better than what it is.

( Boy I need to lay off the candy, that dosn't make sence at all )

Really the opening of God Emporer is the best part. It really shows ........ -blacks out-

I loved GEOD, I can't help but to find the character of Leto somehow true. His visions on the militairy have bother at least one of my friends (don't you just love saying someone's hobby is for men who are homosexual)

I loved this book, for the content and for what it would have meant to the future of Dune... the books that would follow.
(3 books, pre-leto and 3 books anno-Leto...hence the rumour of the 7th book)

Yeh i liked the part about the military also, that was about the only thing that kept me awake tho, hoping on some faint glimmer that the Sardaukar would still exist and House Corrino would once again try to reclaim the Imperial Throne.

Someone told me the Sardaukar were disbanded by Leto but i dont remember anything about that in god emperor.

I found Emp a departure from the usual standards set by the Children and the original (messiah was utterly pointless though not bad, would have functioned better as the first part of children) in that it was utter drivel. FH had previously merged his profound nonsense (examples of this include almost every quotation at the start of a chapter and several conversations throughout) with a good story line. But in Emp, it was just drivel with no basis. By all means, include metaphors and messages but make the catalyst for making them an event, but in this case he didn't and emp was page after page after page of boring nonsense, with dull characters and the perpetuation of the worst character to come from fiction (duncan idaho, alright in his day but like hearing a joke for a thousand times, it soon turns awful.)
What was the point of Emp? In my opinion, it would have been better to go straight from the messiah/children combination to the heretic/chapterhous duet novel (this being how the series should have been in my view). It would have been confusing to start with, but with flashbacks etc could have been made really interesting.

profound nonsense? I'm sure that with this remark you attempt to stir up the converstaion.

Since what you call profound nonsense is basically true and applies to the real world.

If Frank Herbert would have left out God Emperor, and skipped right on to Heretics it would make absouletly no sense. God Emperor was a good book, although the least interesting (well after Messiah) of the series, and without it you could not have Heretics or Chapterhouse. It is not utter drivel or profound nonsense, it is a great sci-fi book. MAY YOU WATCH EPISODE I ONE THOUSAND TIMES!

I agree GEOD was page after page of rambling between duncan and leto etc etc etc and his interior monologues *GASP*!

It wasnt profound nonsense though, it was smart thinking but it isnt too good of a dune book IMO. What do i have to look forward in Heretics of Dune? Can anyone give me a quick synopsis (dont reveal anything major) just to see if im interested?

HoD is basically about the effects that Leto II had on the future of Dune and even mankind.

The Duncan Idaho suffers from too much analysis.

No deliberate attempt to stir up the conversation, merely by opinion. The quotes that start off each chapter get extremely monotonous (FH uses them in a few of his other non-dune books too) and quite pretentious. If FH had each quote filmed, they would have been spoken in a serious, epic manner and have a dramatic musical sting after them, despite not making any sense usually. Few apply to real life. I vaguely remember one in Dune, something along the lines of "my father used to speak of always telling the truth, this is profound thinking if you understand how unstable the truth can be." I haven't singled this one out because it has the word profound in it, but because it isn't so despite trying to be.

As to skipping GEOD, it seems to make perfect sense to me. We would go from the landsraad politics and intrigue into a completely new world and would have been enthralled until we found out how it became so.

Everybody in the GEOD suffers from too much analysis, and given that they start out as mind numbingly dull in the first place, things can only go from bad to worse. FH had the annoying habit of killing off all popular characters.
This also marks the first Dune book written solely for commercial benefit.
What i mean is this: Dune the original created a new world and was fascinating etc, winning awards and being really popular. Messiah tried to continue this, but failed due to being cack. Children was a step in the right direction, but wasn't as epic as Dune since we had already been there and it was a direct continuation of the story. Nothing new really occurred. Herbert then jumped 3000 years into the future and included numerous and varying sexual references such as people having orgasms by watching others climb (eg. duncan). Somehow I doubt this move into the provocative future was completely unrelated with Dune's dwindling success at the time.
But obviously it wasn't enough, so in the next book we have a society of women who go through the universe shagging their way into power.
Really, was so much sex and innuendo really that necessary?

BTW, i really like Episode One so wouldn't mind watching it a thousand times if providing there was a reasonable space between each showing. Just an incidental point here, but you know how Ep One was critically slammed when it came out? It's strange to note that despite this, it has remained within the top 5 video sales since it's release several months ago. Hypocrisy incarnate.

on Ep One, it sucked big time I saw it my friends saw it and it was just plain bad and empty.
most of the characters were annoying and were dumb as hell. Not to mention the acting was abysmal.

Why within the top 5?
Fan boys.
Pretty pictures

the same reason why the spice girls end up at the no 1 position with every new relaese. quality is something else then the number of people that visit a movie, believe me.

Lets not get off topic with Ep One the "movie" was too unadulterated for my tastes. Not to mention it lacked everything that made the original Star Wars great. I couldn't possibly have time to list all of them.

Anyways now that i went off topic myself, can anyone answer my previous post? I would greatly appreciate it =)

Sorry Kaiser, no House Corrino. No House Atreides Either, in fact, I am pretty sure there are no great houses at all.

Episode one was star wars but with good effects. The only bad acting was that of Jar Jar binks and little cute anakin. Are you telling me that everyone who buys the movie is a fan boy looking for pretty pictures? are you sure there are that many alive? 3 months of constant purchasing amounts to millions of videos. And these people will go to see the next one too.

Aggghhhhh what was herbert thinking?! Didn't he know there were FANS of the Feudal-style house warfare?? Sounds like the series is gonna go way down hill for the last 2 books.

did I say that?

I meant that a large portion of the buyers are either a fan boy or pretty-picture-people. Hey MI:2 was #1 for several weeks and it wasn't a good movie.

and yes I'm quite sure that there are that many on this world, besides IF Ep One was a good movie then why did it get nominated for more then one of the rasberry awards?

Face it if a movie sells a lot of copies it isn't nesesairily a good movie. If something is made for the masses, does that make it per definition good? If so most Arnold Schwarznegger, JC v Damme and Sly Stallone movies would/could be considered good movies.
