Dog, that is a really good idea. I like the sounds of it, bigtime. I will post on it in Dune General to generate some ideas on our idea. Hopefully, we can have our own neato website with an online Dune Enclyopedia. I would like to write about Jessica's life on Caladan. What do you think would be an interesting thing to write about?? Since you came up with the brainstorm, you should get first dibbs! Hehe....Anyone else got any thoughts to offer???

Dog: Well, I posted your idea to Dune General. Please check it out to make sure it's ok. Hopefully, people will give us ideas. Lets see how this plays out.

Hopefully,

Coll idea. Especially the thing about contradicting BH. :-)

I like everything except the thing about the contradiction. Would shatter the dune universe even more. Wouldn't it be more challanging to write stuff to justify the contradictions within the books/prequels? Like "repairing the damage" or something :) Then, you could even approach the dune publishers with the result, and have the chance to make it "official".

I agree with Moneo, it os better to try to rrepair the damage made by Brian and Kevin, but I like the idea.

Hmm, there could be some problems, however.
Mostly that of consistency. You would have to co-ordinate at least three to five authors to write stuff that doesn`t contradict the other's stuff. And you would have to perform a few quite hard tasks, if you try to get the "House..."-books in line with the main story. Like, explaining, why Fremen are a secretive society, but ordinary harkonnen troopers know about their most intimate Sietch rituals.
Furthermore, I would not like to write stuff according to BH's books. They are simply not as interesting as FH`s ones. They are not even in need of an encyclopedia, as nearly anything is already explained within the books. The original idea of the encyclopedia probably emerged from a reader who was fascinated by the blank spots and wanted to take a try at clearing them up.

This may sound a bit pessimistic, but I would think that different authors for such a book would have to work closer together than the www alows.

But what could be fun, would indeed be a website with essays on several mainly independent topics.
I would be very interested in style of Warfare in the Duniverse, for example.

Rant end now.

See you !

Another prob: We'd need a provider, and a damn talented programmer to code such a thing. He would have to know much about database design and database web interfaces. Those things are no one-afternoon-job, I can tell you :)

Hello!

Back again (for a while at least...)

Robin H: Your idea about a collection of essays is probably a bit more realistic - I *was* getting a bit carried away back there! - If I write anything half decent I'll try and get it posted on here.

"Repairing The Damage" is a good a place to start as any, I think ;)

I started off writing a short novella about Ix a little while back, but got bored after 1000 words so didn't get much further than Rhombur's death bed scene. If I get it finished I'll shove it somewhere (perhaps this site?) and you guys can help with some feedback to iron out any inconsistencies, glaring errors or just my appalling writing style ;)

Can't promise it will be done for a while, though...

Another good point back there about consistency (I was only joking about conflicting with BH's and KJA's work!) there too...

Moneo and Nora: the web design could turn out to be a potential nightmare, I agree... Sorry I can't help you with that one due to circumstances (eg not being a web programmer ;)

All-

BaronMorantini wrote to my post under Dune General about the encyclopedia and said that he thought that they already had one of those, but he hoped we did it. Is that true, do they already have a encyclopedia website??? Anyone know??

Also, I think we should just try this project. Who knows, mabye we'll become famous!! Hehe...

although he's not very good at updates... houseatreides.com could at least provide a URL for these things to be seen and hosted, if you like. (thus the atempt with the 'Dune Fan Fiction' section).

How bout...ummm...*scratch of the head*...we start looking for a willing designer, and if we decide not to pursue this idea, start chattin about other topics.
Also, anyone know where you can go to get the Jihad books signed when they come out??? If not, where can a person find out? Too bad I couldn't have got HC signed....oh well.
Finally, does anybody out there know if HouseAtreides.com has a suggestion column??? Also, is anyone drafting a Dune Book of some sort??
Sorry bout all the questions, I'm a really interested Dune fan, I guess. Hehehe

I wouldn't mind a map of the known Universe, it would be a great asset for Roleplaying and writing

Perhaps a Dune humor site ?

At a recent booksigning for "butlerian Jihad" brian herbert and kevin anderson mentioned that there may be a book in the works after the butlerian jihad trilogy that covers the childhood of Paul atreides. i hope it covers the Ix inconsistancy and explains why Gurney halleck doesn't recognize Liet Kynes, even though they worked together as smugglers...

on another note, i'm confused on the Bene Tlielax. where did brian herbert and kevin anderson get the idea that they were grey skined dwarves? i'm reading god emporer of dune now and it doesn't describe them as this...it makes them out to be just regular humans who practice foul biological sciences. I'm befuddled...

Good question about the BT...

I don't think people should bother with patching up the inconsistencies. Sure, the prequels are set in the same universe, but the mood and writing style is so different that I don't think of them as being part of the real DUNE.

To me, BH and KJA don't hold a match to Frank Herbert. Their work is just an extra dose for DUNE fanatics, but not really DUNE IMO.

I agree whit taqwa!
