I really did.
I'm not saying it was the most perfect mini-series I've ever seen, but it certainly wasn't the worst. It also showed Dune in a different light, it was inviting new people to experience the story. I think that's why I liked it so much, because it was open to anyone and everyone. The Lynch version could only be truly enjoyed if you had read the book, it wasn't accesible to newbies. I remember seeing the movie first and I was absolutely lost, after I saw it a second time things started making sense, but it was still pretty vague, it was after I've read the book that I could completely understand the movie.
I've heard people say that they it was the mini-series that convinced them to start reading the books.
I didn't expect the Mini series to be completely the same as the book, that's impossible, so when they changed the story I wasn't annoyed by it. I accepted it, and in a certain way, I embraced it. It's entertainment, I really enjoyed watching it, just because it was Dune.
I liked it, I really did, not because of the quality (which I still think was high for a mini-series... I mean, have you seen those biblical mini-series like Noah's Ark... *shudder*) but because of the fact that it was Dune and that it probably got a lot more people reading the books.
I gained more than I lost with this mini-series.

I'll admit that was a good defense of the mini.

Good above par...but I wished that the designers ommitted the triangle on Feyd's back, Irulan with blonde hair and the funny-looking imperial customes worn by Paul's entourage at the end of the series. Thumbs-up for the Sardaukar customs and Fremen robes.

That's just details you know. Each director wants to put a little of his own into his production right? For Harrison it might just have been the costumes. Overall, the mini was excellent.

Forget that there both about Dune - pretend you don't care about which one is more like that book. Pretend you never even heard the word Dune until you watched the movie and mini.
Now can you still say that the mini is even remotely good? It really dosen't stand on its own. It's just not entertaining.

yes I can say the mini series is good. Because it's friendlier to those who are completely new to the Duniverse.

Exactly. For most people, the books are too complex to grasp at first and a somewhat easier introduction into Dune is required. The Lynch version was quite complex as well, more like the books and it couldn't have served for an intro, simply because you had to have known the books to get the film. The series on the other hand does something else - its meant to get you interested in the novel(s) after you see it.

I hated it. The characters were horrific and Paul is never a spoiled brat....yet that's what he was here. Only Jessica was accurate. Stillgar was pathetic. I litterally felt sick and was unable to watch most of it.
Frank is still twisting in his grave.
Leto's tooth deal was actually comical.

Call me a wuss, I saw things that I liked and disliked in both. I think the miniseries wins on points, but it's close.
David Lynch did get one thing right: he did a great job of conveying the paranoia of imperial politics. I liked his sets and costumes, but his script was a mess. If you hadn't read the book you were lost and even if you had things went way too fast. The Smithee version fixes some of the flaws, but even there Paul goes from outsider to Fremen leader almost instantaneously, blowing over one the most interesting section of the book. I realize this isn't entirely Lynch's fault -- the time constraints were forced on him, and then once the studio realized they had an incoherent mess they cobbled together their own version so they would have something to syndicate. Hey, nobody said Hollywood was pretty.
The miniseries was slightly better. The sets were kinda cheesy at times (Vaguely reminiscent of the original Star Trek series -- I half expected to see Captain Kirk wander in and start hitting on Irulan) and the hats the Bene Gesserit wore were laughable. On the other hand, they had more time to actually tell the story and for the most part used it well. They really took time to work out Paul's rise among the Fremen.
Sci-fi is tough to transfer from book to screen, especially if the story has as many dedicated fans as Dune does. The two most successful Sci-fi story lines started out on TV (Star Trek) or film (Star Wars) so when Roddenberry unveiled the Enterprise he didn't have millions of fans checking to see if his starship was true to the one in the books. So I shouldn't have been surprised that there have been two shots at Dune and neither is entirely satisfactory.

Hey, hey, come one! The Sardaukar costumes are good enough to show that they are elite soldiers whose prowess include martial arts, swordsmanship and using lasguns. Well, the original design of the Sardaukar by David Lynch's film suits the idea that they are protecting themselves from radiation attack and projectiles. But certainly, the ms conveys a better and logical design of soldiers whose prowess includes martial arts.
Merchant of Venice? Perhaps the cap makes it a bit funny.

Well drats, I guess I'm the only one who really loved the miniseries.
Seriously, don't ya think that people take this a bit too seriously? I mean, I'm as much a sci-fi fan as the next person.
But when someone says "Such-and-such a person couldn't play the character right" or "The miniseries characters weren't right", don't ya think that's a matter of perception?
Personally, I thought the miniseries had excellent characters. That's pretty much how I envisioned them when I read the books. Now granted, I saw the miniseries before I read the books, so I admit that it probably shaped my perceptions when I read the book. But isn't it possible that someone could read the book first and envision the characters basically as the miniseries presented them?
Isn't it ultimately a matter of perception? One person says the miniseries screwed up, while another person will say it hit the nail on the head.
(BTW, I also saw the Lynch movie BEFORE I read the books, and I really didn't envision the characters that way, especially the Baron.)

Hey Vince,
Do you think you're the only one? There are legions of fans out there, including me, who are fanatic fans of the miniseries. Nobody's perfect enough to convey the original ideas of the original book but John Harrison did fine anyway.
I like the ms simply because it shows the real world of Dune: the robed Fremen, the city of Arrakeen, the accurate picture of the dreaded Fedaykin, the Maker Hooks, the powerful martial arts, the accurate weirding way, the real pictures of the Sardaukar, the real irritable Shaddam IV and finally, the messy battle of Arrakeen.
But of course, we cannot make everything perfect. Things just have to divert sometimes to make a way for another purpose to be done. Well, when the blind Paul tried to stop the vision of his son, Leto, he could not. What did he do? He joined him. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

We thought the series was excellent! It has its flaws, but also its assets - as does Lynch's film... Btw, anyone ever get a look at the Jodoryvsky project?

My name is Kaiser and I loved the Dune Miniseries!
The Sardaukar uniforms rocked, the only thing I wouldve changed is made their hat a beret instead the floppy thing.....
