Here are other books I suggest reading, including one book which is Dune's equal!

The Lord of The Rings (Trilogy) (+ the Hobbit too)
If Dune is the best Sci-Fi book EVER written, then Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books are the best Fantasy books EVER written. (Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The Hobbit was published after the trilogy but is a prequel to the first book and I suggest reading it first)
I really mean it, I had never read them until just now, and I LOVE THEM. Tolkien's books MADE D&D and worlds alike. I liked the Lord of the Rings more than the Hobbit, as the Hobbit was a tale of what was, but all rock.
A MUST READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THEM!

I suggest reading Robert Heinlien's Starship Troopers it is one of the best science fiction books ever written(after Dune of course).

LOTR aside (I'm currently reading them for the first time and love them dearly); Starship Troopers aside (love this book; the movie, good as it was, didn't do the book justice at all); you simply can NOT go past Asimov's Foundation. But, whatever you do, read them in this order:
Foundation,
Foundation and Empire,
Second Foundation,
Foundation's Edge,
Foundation and Earth; THEN
go back and read
Prelude to Foundation and
Forward the Foundation.
FORGET reading the Second Foundation saga; it completely and utterly sucks rocks. When Asimov wrote the original series; the man had vision. The writers of the new series only have visions of dollar signs and this is very sad.

Neuromancer anybody? Surely you must have read that? And what about Moorcock's Jerry Cornelius serires? C'mon - there are a lot more exciting sci-fi books out there than Heinlein and Asimov (even if I do love 'em both).

It's funny, Herbert promotes a Scattered galaxy as the key to humans' survival while Asimov argues for a sprawling empire. Talk about opposite ends of the universe. :)

MMM>>> Well I can't stomach anything with a dragon or troll or not in it so here's my BEST OF THE LITERARY WORLD LIST. In no particular order::

****OF course ALL that is DUNE****
*The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolf : Where else can you find a torturer as the protagonist.
*The Wild Road by Gabriel King : It's about cats (?)
*Darwinia by Robert Charles Wilson : You want to ponder existence, buy THIS
*The Faded Sun Trilogy by CJ Cherryh : I bought it cus it had a pretty desert on the cover, it's about race and discrimination on a galactic scale

Now I've yet to read Starship Troops but if it's better than the movie... Well I think I'll have to.

The book Starship troopers was a very nice (and quick) read. A LOT of differences from the movie. Although not a cover-to-cover read, the "Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy" is a great (and a little off-the-wall) book to pick up and read a bit here and there. (a trilogy in 4 parts).

Ahemmmm! The "Hitch-hiker's Guide" is a trilogy in *five* parts. I recommend the first four, though.
I'm really surprised nobody has mentioned Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" saga:
The Eye of the World
The Great Hunt
The Dragon Reborn
The Shadow Rising
The Fires of Heaven
Lord of Chaos
A Crown of Swords
The Path of Daggers
Winter's Heart (to be released this November)
...And an undetermined number of sequels.
Cheers,

Watership Down is very good. Lots of depth. IT by Stephen King is pretty good. 2001, 2010 and 3001 all rock too. The Red Dwarf books are hilarious, as are the Hitch Hikers Guide.

Herbert Sr, Asimov and Clarke are definitely my top three :-)) 3001 is excellent!! I'd also recommend the Martian Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson: Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars. Btw, where can you try to get second hand books (financial issue again I know)if SH bookshops don't have them? Perhaps order somewhere?... Help...

Even though it isn't Science Fiction, for anybody who's read The Godfather by Mario Puzo, (or seen the movie) I've kind of noticed a parallel in the stories between it and Dune. They both deal with a family struggling to survive against the treachery of other powerful families, and it's son who rises to save it.
Michael Corleone=Paul Atreides
Vito Corleone=Leto Atreides
the Tataglia family=House Harkonnen
Don Barzini=the Emperor

It was allready said elsewhere, but Stephen King´s Dark Tower series succeeds in creating a different world nearly as good as DUNE. I don´t know where to really settle the books.
They are not only good reading stuff but also provide a look into a genius´s mind. In any case read the Intros and extros, they are amazing.

Yup. And also Herbert Sr's trilogy:
The Jesus Incident
The Lazarus Effect
The Ascension Factor

If somebody's already mentioned these books, I'm only supporting your opinion! :-))

And there's also Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" - a must-read, though I wouldn't call it science fiction.

personally I reccomend #1 after dune: Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time.. it is the Greatest Fantasy Novel written in this half of the 20th century and rivals the Lord of the Rings. Also, the Dark Tower by stephen King is a roller coaster ride of the strangest world I've ever imagined!

For a quick read I reccomend David Eddings Belgariad/Mallorean. They are not as well written as the other three, but are amazing reads
