I've decieded to go through and read all the dune books and read them in order. Whatever the opinions or thoughts concerning christoper and kevins books, I'm going to start with The Butlerian Jihad and got through The Machine Crusade, The Battle of Corrin, House Atradies, House Harkonnen, House Corrino, Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God-Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, Chaptehouse: Dune, Hunters of Dune and by the time I finish all these books Sandworms of Dune will be out. As I read the entire series in order I will make notes and observations to how all the pieces fit. If anybody else would like to undertake this task let me know and we will compare notes as we read them. Cheers.
P.S Started rereading The Butlerian Jihad after reading the short story Hunting Harkonnens.

You mean Brian and Kevin?

What order? Please don't read them in that order.
I recommend reading them in the order they were published.

Read FH's books first:

Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune

It may be to late if you've read some of the prequels first. IMO opinion the damage is irreversable.

I've already read both prequel series, Franks books and Hunters. I decided, since waiting for Sandworms that I would go back and read the whole entire series, both Brian and Franks books, to get a flow of the story. Its been along time since i read franks books so i figured reading them all in chronlogical (sic) order it would let me look for different things. Granted, Brians style is completly different from Frank's, however i wanted to see how the stories fit together. One thing i do not like is the fact that Brian and Kevin should have waited till the conclusion of Dune 7 before writing the Legends series. The Enemy in Hunters was not a surprise at all considering all the "hints" that were dropped in the Legends series. If anyone of you want to deal with reading Brians books and join me in reading the series let me know. Cheers

By the way, as a historical account, dune works into the whole histroy of man kind with The Bulterian Jihad reminding me of the Roman Empire compared to our current society which would be about the time of Dune? Anyone wanna discuss that?

halfway through the butlerian jihad, i kind of like it the second way through, it has some interesting character development, of course its completly different in writing style then franks, but the way the story progresses reminds me of other herbert stories like the jesus incident. however, the have alot of "recaps" in each chapter that really bothers me. It makes me wonder if they had an editior for these books. i remember the machine crusade being worse when it came to chapter "recaps". I also have a hard time with the sonic blasts of the soceriers (sic) of rossak. i know that frank mentions them somewhere at the end of dune but it will be interesting to see if frank talked about them elsewhere through his dune series. anybody want to discuss this further? cheers

Do anyone remember where in the original Dune books did he mention or allude to the soceress of rossak and sonic blasts?

Cheers

Freakzilla found a quote, I think. Something about them being real sorceresses. Funny thing is, it’s one of the only times FH goes out in limb and actually puts something really unscientific into his Dune novels. Then BH, who’s written about Omniscient Oracles and metallic dinosaurs, goes out and calls them telepaths. It seems to me that the bstrd goes out of his way to contradict his dad.

frank mentions the sorcerecess in the appendix (?) of Dune. You are quite right shinnok, frank never mentions them as telepaths. I have a big problem with them being unscientific. Even frank brought the guild and the mentats as having been developed mentally by training. anything "supernatural" (prescience) was brought about by the spice (drugs). Would the enviroment of Rossak have brought out the mental abilities of the women there? Well....That would make the enviroment almost as powerful as the spice. Is this a Brian creation (telepathy)? Well......Frank wrote about some pretty crazy stuff in his other books (The Jesus Incident and Destination:Void come to mind) but telepathy? I dont know. Could it have been in Franks notes? Maybe...we may never know since Brian has decided to not publish his fathers notes. By the way Sardaukar One, as I has mentioned before, I have already read the Legends, Prelude and Hunters books. I decided to go back and reread the series in its entirety looking for continuity and discrepencies. And to read the whole saga for the pleasure or torture of reading the future history of the human race that is portrayed in dune. For better of worse that is. So, as you state, it is not too late. Cheers
