In the early to mid 1950's, the town wanted to build a little league field. There was no little league team because they didn't have a field to play on. So some of the town leaders got together and I think purchased the field they decided to use behind the Corinna school which was known then as the Eastland School. Then Paul Perkins, T-Bob Buckland, and Ronnie Bell among others formed the first team to play against the surrounding towns. I remember Mr. Perkins and I borrowed my father's rotortiller and we rotortilled the whole field thinking that his son, Joe, and myself would be able to play on the little league team. But come to find out, Joe and I were too old for the league. But Joe's father, Paul, still coached for quite a few years anyway. However, Joe and I did have our turn in high school when they extended the bases to 90 feet and allowed the high school to use it for baseball. So all of our hardwork did pay off.

There is a long tradition of baseball in Corinna. My great uncle Walter Kerr and some others in town played on what I beleive were semi-pro teams many years ago.

I've sat on the bleachers at the same field Eddie mentioned to watch my own son play.

Speaking about the semi-pro team, I believe that my father-in-law, Gene welch, my brother-in-law, Dale Welch and maybe my first husband, Phil Welch, played on that team. Dale is the only one living now. I remember going to places like Greenville and Brownville Junction to some games.

Long before the field under discussion there was a baseball field near Morses Corner. I was official scorekeepper for the semipro team that was in the Eastern Maine league for several years.
Gene Welch, Billy Buckland, and Walter Kerr were among the members of that team. Ken, I introduced Walter to your great aunt Myra at a dance at Camp Benson. Shee was a friend and Walter became one - for many years.

Wayne-
Your introduction of Myra and Walter at Camp Benson led to a marriage that lasted for more than 50 years. Pretty good work I'd say.

I have heard my uncle Martin Curtis talk about playing baseball for corinna. He mentioned of the team being taken to greenville on a hay waggon and boarding the steam ship in greenville and going up Moosehead Lake to play the private school or boys camp on Kineo....

I have a very old picture of Gene Welch, Phil Welch, and Dale Welch(my dad) dressed in Corinna Baseball Uniforms. I don't know the year. Baseball in Corinna does go WAY back.
