Amsterdam = City.
Netherlands = The Country.
Holland = Provinces (two of 'em, and consequently where Amsterdam is and many people.)

Think of it like the UK vs. England vs. British Isles.

In ancient Greece, the area was known to be the entrance to the netherworld.

I couldn't find an answer so I made up my own. Sounds legit enough.

Because much of it is either outright below sea level or at very low elevation relative to other water sources.  The lowlands of western Europe.  They're famous for dikes.  I thought everyone knew this.

Or am I missing a reference here?

I never took the thread seriously. I'm hoping most of us knew this.
