Title: Soda snobs
Post by: Dave on July 14, 2013, 09:55:26 PM
This is something that I've seen people write about and I just don't understand. People being super picky about their coke and how it's served and how it's just undrinkable if it's done wrong. Like, I understand that there's a slight taste difference between coke and pepsi, but if you're at a restaurant that has the other one, is it really such a huge deal? They're both cola. Or the difference between it being served in a can or a bottle or between plastic and glass. Or how disgusting it gets if you get it served with ice, because of how it waters down the taste, or even having a preference for drinking through a straw. I just don't understand it. It's not a refined taste, it's not a fine wine. It's just fuckin soda.

Any taste can be refined if you care enough.

The question is, why care so much about soda?

diet coke supremacy. I only drink regular if I need wake myself up. AND, if you spill it it isn't sticky.

Diet Coke wouldn't be necessary if you followed their hints and made the original.

Also, coke in a glass bottle tastes a lot better than from a bottle.

The hierarchy goes:

Glass bottle Coke > Fountain Coke > Coke in a can > Liter Coke

And canned Coke in China tastes much better than Pepsi. I don't drink Pepsi here. Way too sweet.

I agree with this order, though glass bottle coke is completely different, made with sugar instead of HFCS.

Pepsi is sweeter than Coke in general.

I don't drink very much soda but you might as well have an opinion on it when you do.

I'm no snob but I love Coca Cola. the best is Mexican Coke because it's made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. the difference in taste is astounding.

I disagree a bit with this hierarchy. I have always enjoyed Coke from a can the most. When it's ice cold it's amazing. And when you open the can, that noise, it's part of the experience. I would say:

Coke in a can > Glass bottle Coke > Fountain Coke > Liter Coke

Actually any soda from a plastic bottle is generally disgusting. I also like to use a straw with a can if possible, as it prolongs the experience. Glass bottles usually only happens on special occasions for me, like if it's Christmas or if I'm on vacation or something (See Mexican cokes in San Diego). However, they do sell Mexican cokes in bodegas in NYC so sometimes you can pick one up and it's delicious.

I used to prefer Pepsi, but at some point I began to prefer the fizz of Coke to the sweetness of Pepsi.

Some people just do not understand the refined taste of soda.

I liked Pepsi more as a kid, but Coke tastes much better these days. Yeah, I usually get a can over a bottle here. Depends on my mood.

But again, Dr Pepper > everything.

When Coke is not available, my alternative would generally be a lemon-lime soda. I feel like Sprite is more commonly found than 7 Up so that tends to be my 2nd choice. I've never been a Dr. Pepper fan. Only had a handful in my life and didn't particularly enjoy any of them. However, I get that it is a very distinct flavor and I could still see the appeal even though I don't like it.

OH, and let's not forget Coke variations such as Vanilla, Cherry, Zero, etc. I find all of these variations to be disgusting. I will tolerate Cherry Coke but usually only because Luke and Maggy have forced me to purchase it.

Soda has been relagated in my brain to the "Americans Are gross" compartment along with things like Doritos, white zin, Two and a Half Men, and ranch dressing.

I am not saying I don't occasionally enjoy soda or ranch dressing but I usually feel pretty shameful afterward.

Rude. I'd rather stay the same weight than get even fatter. I know plenty of thin girls who also drink it.

I like cherry coke.  It's far superior by the fountain but it's an interesting twist.

Fun khakain fact: Maggy always orders fountain sodas with no ice because he's a jew and wants to get the most soda for his $1.25

I feel the same way about most of those things most of the time, but I don't know anything about the white zin snobbery. ;) I like making ranch dip, you know, with sour cream and stuff for vegetables, but I avoid the premade frankenfood versions or dressings most of the time.
Soda is drank all over, but I doubt in anywhere near the same volume per capita as America.

Title: Re: Soda snobs
Post by: TurboEmu on July 16, 2013, 06:18:37 AM
It is not so much the soda itself as it is American aversion to just hydrating with water.  Everything has got to be an entertainment experience and very few people drink water in the way that they should because they're so well trained not to.
Those little flavored water packets that everyone carries around now to add to bottled water (because tap water is soooo unclean) are pretty much the height of my frustration.

Title: Re: Soda snobs
Post by: It Doesnt Matter on July 16, 2013, 06:22:28 AM
I really try not to drink that much soda but sometimes I do get cravings. Most of the time if I drink anything it's water, but soda is like my treat. That or a milk shake :D

It's not a Jew thing, you fucking waste, it's that the soda's almost always cold enough already, and adding ice just waters it down, something that's oftentimes already done by the cheap restaurant-owning assholes you've been brainwashed into defending.

if i am preparing my own soda, at a fountain or something, i will not include ice.

but ill never request withholding ice if someone is serving me.

I was just ranting about those the other day. What a completely useless product to further clog up landfill space. Hopefully that little trend dies soon, but we know there will be some other stupid gimmick taking its place.
Just drink some fucking water! Fuck's sake.

Most of the time if I drink anything it's water, but soda is like my treat.

Same. (I finally got clean from my Simply fruit juice addiction. One day at a time...) Bout once a month I just gotta have a Coke (there is something very satisfying about a canned vanilla Coke, imo). I also like Sierra Mist because it uses real sugar vs. HFCS, and Diet SM has the least offensive diet taste to me. Coke Zero isn't too bad either.

Why? It'd be kind of a dick move to send it back if they forget and give you ice anyway, because it's not *that* big of a deal, but what's wrong with asking when you give your order?

Yeah. Even if you guys are drinking your sodas an hour later, that ice will have melted long ago, rendering your sugar water to become mostly just off-tasting water.

Are these flavor packets full of vitamins? Or are they just glorified Kool-Aid packets? Water is pretty bland.

it's a sad state of affairs when you have to make up stories about how ice is going to upset the balance of your glass of high fructose corn syrup when really you just want to get the most high fructose corn syrup for your $1.25

They don't sell the different flavoured Cokes here anymore, you can only get it at certain specialty stores. I got a vanilla Coke at a candy specialty store (they import candies and such from Europe, that kinda thing) a few months ago and it was amazing. I forgot what it tasted like. Mexican coke is indeed the best, they sell it at an amazing burrito place my friend recommended to me.

I like to get mineral and sparkling water regularly.

I won't drink the water additives, like Mio, nor gatorade type drinks. (Gatorade is awful.) However, if adding some Mio or crystal light to some water encourages people to drink something other than sports drinks and soda, well, baby steps.

You drink 1 1/4 gallons of water a day?  You must spend an hour a day in the bathroom.

I drink about half a gallon a day, mostly because Dunk's kidney stone story scared the shit out of me.  I don't want to have a sharp spiky rock in my weiner.

Also, I read that the very first symptom of dehydration is your brain working less gooder.  If I chug a bunch of water in the morning (you're dehydrated when you wake up), my brain feels less stupid.
