Title: The Side Effects of Being Sober
Post by: Hitman on February 27, 2010, 02:50:14 PM
Since I'm having one of those days where I make a million threads, here's another one for you.

Everyone is always talking about the side effects of taking drugs. The thing is, when you take drugs for an extended period of time those side effects become normal things. As such, when you stop taking said drugs then the transition back can be just as hard (that's not even taking into consideration the withdrawal symptoms). For example, all the opiates I took ruined my sex drive and reduced my testosterone levels drastically. Ever since I've gone clean I've been horny as fuck. I feel like I'm 16 years old again. Also, when I was on opiates I literally never got sick, never had migraines and never felt much physical pain. But now I feel all that stuff; I get the occasional headache like everyone else and I've actually gotten sick for a few days.

Other side effects of not taking drugs (or opiates to be precise) include:

- Shitting all the time ... it used to be impossible to go to the bathroom
- Overly busy, taking on too much work ... I'm always doing stuff nowadays so I have very little time to sit around and play games, watch tv/movies or post here
- Depression ... Sometimes I feel down because being sober can be depressing after you've done your fair share of drugs
- Too much exercuse... This isn't really a side effect but I've been working out a lot more even though I did workout when I was on opiates too,  mainly because I could push myself to lift heavier or run faster since I didn't feel pain
- Reduced urge to vomit... I no longer throw up everything I eat which sucks cause throwing up was fun
- Dramatically increased appetite ... people typically get fat after getting off of opiates
- Partially reduced productivity ... Even though I'm keeping busy and taking on more work, I find that I'm not as productive at work all the time (believe it or not getting high sometimes improved my productivity)

As you can see, being sober is no walk in the park. I think the government should start communicating the side effects of being sober so people understand the risks.
