Forgive my obvious ignorance but can one of you experts out there tell me whether it is possible to substitute a Buescher, either a C-melody or Alto neck, for a Conn alto sax that is currently neckless? I know it's asking a lot for a different make and model to fit but can it be done? Gratefully yours, N.

Whereas the tenon diameter may well be a fit, in all probability a C Mel neck would be too long. This is a guess, but logic dictates.

Numbat.
Just measured the length of necks of my horns, from mouthpiece end to tenon stop. Alto (Conn New Wonder) 8.25 inches. C Melody, both Buescher and King, about 10 inches. Although the bores of the C Mel and alto are much the same I doubt if you could hack off 1.75 inches from a C Mel neck as there would be a problem with the relative position of the top octave pip. From memory the Conn straight neck C Mel has a longer neck than it's alto counterpart.
A curved neck on an Eb alto would look rather cool though!

Thank you for your time and detailed research. It's definitely given me something to think about. I knew you guys would come up trumps!
This is my first communication in this forum but I really enjoy some of the comments and the huge amount of learned knowledge.... everyone so generously shares. Cheers, Numbat.

Lewis, you've touched a nerve - having (in a moment of weakness) bought an old alto with a C-Melody neck - and having a spare alto neck - maybe I'll get someone to reform the spare alto neck into a shallow 'tenor' curve......

As you say, cool....

Alan. On reflection, perhaps it would not be too cool to be playing with your hands up around your ears! Curving the neck would , of course, raise the sax body. Nice idea all the same.......
