My straight neck conn arrived yesterday, it cost me £130 including postage and I'm over the moon. The original conn reso pads have nearly all fallen off, as have the corks but except for some very light tarnish and surface scratches the body etc is virtually perfect with the bright silver plating almost 100%; if it wasn't for slight wear on the octave key I would have suspected it had never been played. It is obvious that it has never been worked on, all the screw heads are perfect, and must have been stored in a dry atmosphere, even the serial number seems special - 101101. I'm tempted to start on it straight away but common sense dictates I finish my Kalashan first.

130= $244USA. So Paul, will you put on reso pads?

That's the question, I've more or less decided to use black roo pads on the Kalashan, with noyeks, but there does seem to be a body of opinion which feels resos are the way to go with the straight neck. Fortunatley I can leave that decision for a while and ask for other's opinions and do research on previous threads.

I think that I'm going to use the Music Medic pads for Conn C mel, has anyone else had any experience with them?

Chaps....(and chappettes)....Use albino wallaby skin pads with titanium resonators held on with monkey glue. (It doesn't matter if the monkeys that the glue was made from were albino or not. Also use a digeridoo mouthpiece. (C melody digeridoo, of course).

Jungle Jim....I am utterly amazed at your advice. I did in fact repad my straight neck Conn C Melody using the albino wallaby skin pads with the titanium resonators. The only difference was, that I used monkey glue that WAS made from ALBINO monkeys. I found that the albino monkey glue bonded much better with the albino wallaby pads. (It must have something to do with genetics). I thought I was the only C melody lover in the world to use that combination in a repad. It goes to show you that there are very few ideas that are totally original. It's a shame that these little creatures have to sacrifice their lives for the sake of our experimening with our rebuilds.

Jungler Jim....That last line should read "experimenting with our rebuilds". Please excuse the typo.

Jungle Jim...I also meant to tell you that I found that the Bb short shank tenor digeridoo mouthpiece sounds much better on my Conn straight neck than the C melody digeridoo mouthpiece does. (also forgive the typo in your name spelling in the previous post "Jungler Jim" as opposed to "Jungle Jim"). Cheers.

Do you guys REALLY believe it's authentic wallaby/kangaroo skin ? Those Australian bushmen would sell anything to anybody, without a shred of conscience......... Probably black rat !
Has a sort of 'ring' to it tho', don't you think ?
"Black rat pads with noyeks...." Could catch on !

Paul, Jungle Jim, Mungo Matt and Mungo Alan(UK)...I used all of the above on my Conn straight neck repad. I did not even need the repad, as all of my pads were original and like new. But I figured; Hey, I might as well jump on this repad-mouthpiece train while it is still on the tracks and rollin' along. The strange thing is: Now my C melody sounds like a digeridoo with a hint of monkey chatter overtones and wallaby squeal tone. My musician friends love it. Oh by the way, I am using Eucalyptus reeds cut into the shape of a Koala bear!

I can see now how the c-melody saxophone gained in popularity in the Out-Back in the 1920's when it was often passed round with the gin-filled Billy-Can when the pioneers where sitting around their camp fires at night. Bet Tasmanian-Devils loved it, especially those wallaby squeals.
