A few years ago I purchased at auction a J.W. York & Sons C Melody Sax. Notations under the thumbhook are: "60881, Low Pitch, Licence Pat. Dec. 8, 1914." On the bell, surrounded by a floral bouquet, it says "J.W. York & Sons. Grand Rapids, MI.

My husband plays tenor, but I bought this one for me. I am not a sax player (former flute player), but a wannabe. <g> What would be a good type of mouthpiece to use on this C Melody, and what would be a good reed for a beginner? The current mouthpiece has no markings, but the mouthpiece cover says "Humes" and on the ligature is the letter "C"

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey everyone-- I just realised that 1947 was the first big year for UFO sightings and abductions. Maybe our 1947 births were the product of an alien experiment gone wrong, which instead of producing all-powerful blonde children, just produced doddering men on the verge of old age who have developed a bizarre urge to play obsolete saxophones from the birth of the age of technology and developed the totally unintended power to make long, rambling sentences to amuse themselves, while the world has passed them by. The only remnant of alien life left in my faint memory is my lust for an automobile that looks like a rocket ship: my Studebaker.

Jb1 - you really should start a 'blog'. You can just ramble on, and being also Moderator/Administrator, no-one can argue......

We can fill up cyberspace with our ramblings ! I keep looking at the stars and sighing - maybe I had an early 'close encounter' that was eliminated from my memory, but just a suspicion remains in my subconscious ? "Artificially inseminated by an alien" would look neat on a birth certificate, wouldn't it ?

Keep on going young man, I waited for life to "begin at 40", then maybe thought it was a mis-print and it really begins at 50, but I have to say that the retro's haven't fired up at 60 either !

Mind you, I did get a free bus pass last week ! Maybe I'll take a sax or clari on the bus and start a mobile Hooley ?

No, it was just horny army guys coming back from the war around 1946. My father spent the war years in the Pacific.

Saxismyaxe...Sax is my axe too. I made a mistake. What do you want? A notorized letter of appology? The advice I gave was given to me by someone who claimed to know about the 1914 date. He was wrong and so was I, and so are many others who thought it was viable. There you have it. Now move on!

Saxismyaxe - I am the one who told Captain Muggles about the 1914 date. The info was given to me by a repairman from Philadelphia by the name of George Sarkis. He has since passed away. He was wrong. You are right. Hoorah.
