The new C sax design

I just got back from the factory where we discussed the new C sax production specs and time schedule. The development costs are way higher than I expected but within the realms of possibility still.

The new sax will be a narrow bore like my Conn but will be essentially an entirely new instrument.
The keywork modification will be extensive with a complete repositioning of mechanisms to enable ergonomic operation and incorporate modern advantages including high F#.
There will be an option of either straight neck or Tenor style with new octave mechanism. The necks will not be interchangeable with old Conn saxes. They will be designed to fit Aquilasax Classic mouthpieces.
The finish options will include Silver, gold, nickel, and black and some different combinations of bell and keywork. They will feature hand engraving and will have several different themes.

For other details we will have to wait and see.
Development will begin in October and production should begin early next year.

It will be a thing of beauty and easy to play!

I have come in late on this.... are you saying that you are making a new kind of C melody from scratch? If so, I am interested in having one.

Wow!A website for C Melody Sax! And I thought I was the only one who enjoyed being able to play with keyboards and not having to transpose! My sax is a Wurlitzer American, and what a tone!

I'd like to hear more about this new sax as it comes out.

Rod - I'm also a fervent admirer of Steve's efforts to get a new C-Sax onto the Market, if you haven't been there, check my UK site - you'll find you're far from being alone....

I checked the new C sax prototype out last week, for intonation and key placement (comfort)
There are some adjustments to be made but the factory manager is confident we'll see production in June.
Sounds great and I was so excited to play a NEW c sax.

Hi Steve,
I have read a couple of months about the discussions of a new construction of C sax. I'm very interested in the matter. My old Conn C Melody from 1923 is in very good condition, but why not to buy a newone with an excelent key work and oldtime sound. I like a straight neck and silver plating. Cs has a very fine history in the begining of 19th century, as we know. The horn must absolutely look out like a wintage instrument.

I don't believe that laquer or plating are very big things in chosing sound. Sound is made by a mouthpiece, ligature, reed and finally by a player.

I'd like to hear more about that iteresting Aquila C sax.

Best regards,
Alvi

Steve has been kind enough to send me an Aquilasax alto to evaluate, so I can see an example of the production quality from the factory that will be making the new C Sax - it's at the local delivery depot now, be with me in the morning.

I'll post a precis of my findings on the Bravenet forum, with a link to the review on my website - and I'll be taking loads of pics !

I just noticed the removable bow section this morning on Steve's site. Awsome!!!
It is shown with a straight neck, but Alan's page says that it will come with curved neck standard. Which one is it going to be?

Tnx,

Tom - Steve is probably still asleep, as it's midnight yesterday in new Zealand (:-)). I understand curved neck as standard (with option of straight), just that the prototype pictured had a straight neck - I asked that question, which is why I put that on my page.

For info, I've received the Aquilasax "evaluation" alto, see the new forum for more -

Just to advise that I've published a review of the Aquilasax alto (coming, as it does, from the same factory as the new C Sax will...) which is liberally sprinkled with comments about the new Aquilasax C Sax. It's at -

http://www.cmelodysax.co.uk/aquilasax/review.htm

And the info page about the new C Sax is still at -

Sorry but,
The production is not over.
The factory have finished all 100 sax parts but not assembled yet. The end is in sight!
Working on that now! That puts sale date back a bit, looking at August again!

Also the depreciation of the US Dollar has raised the cost but I am determined to keep to the original $700 for a gold lacquered model.

Instead of raising the price I will just charge extra for extras, so the most expensive model will be a silver plated, straight necked, engraved one.

Pic of the new Production model with Pheonix engraving on website.

So easy to play!

I've added Steve's latest pictures of the 2007 C Sax - it's a lovely looking instrument - to my 'Aquilasax' page. Steve is quite a modest chap, but I've made the new pictures BIG...

(in case you wonder, the pics are of (both) gold lacquer and black nickel finishes...)

Most handsome saxophones...full marks to you Steve.
The L/H thumbrest on the black nickel model (Alan's site) is a turquoise coloured material...are all the "pearls" the same? Very tasty.

Lewis - I believe that thumb-rest is being made from "New Zealand Paua shell", possibly just for the first batch ? May become an endangered species if the sax sells in the thousands.....

I think the other touches are standard 'pearl' (or whatever synthetic material simulates pearl these days ?) To see a modern sax in 'C' dimensions is very encouraging !
