Selmer - Way overpriced. Cannonball - Excellent horn for much less money!

Cannonball is an excellent horn.

So is Jupiter. The Student model is built like a tank! Their Artist model is a wonderful concert horn and can really cook in a jazz or big-band situation. The Artist model has a less harsh sound than the Student Model. My Daughter plays her Jupiter Student Model for Marching Field Shows (they take a lot of abuse in these shows) and switches to her Artist model for jazz and concert bands. When she plays her flute, her boyfriend puts down his Cannonball Alto and picks up her Jupiter Artist Tenor.

I guess the question is what level of player is your son, and what price are you seeking?

Student player: I recommend the Jupiter Student Model.
Marching Band: I recommend the Jupiter Student Model.
Intermediate player in concert situation (indoors or out): Your choice of Cannonball Big Bell Series or Jupiter Artist Model. Both are powerful well playing horns.

Just a word of caution on the Jupiter Saxophone included mouthpiece. My daughter's Jupiter’s would not play in tune with the manufacturer included mouthpiece. With a vintage Large Chamber mouthpiece the Jupiter’s are spot on with intonation. So, don't think you got a bad sax if it plays out of tune with the included mouthpiece, try a couple of others to check. I don't know about the Cannonball included mouthpiece.

When trying to find a sax for my daughter, we hit every music store within a 50 mile radius and played every tenor sax they had. This included Yamaha, Selmer, Vito, Unison, Cannonball, Buescher and Keilworth. Based upon sound alone she chose the Jupiter Artist Model. Based upon money we settled on the Jupiter Student Model. A year later I bought her the Artist Model. She rejected the Yamaha because she felt its sound was too harsh. She rejected the Keilworth because of the metal-to-metal clunking of the keys, it had quite a noisy setup! She felt the most comfortable with the Jupiter Artist Model in both playing position and sound. My daughter is 5’3” and 95 pounds, so the tenor is quite a large sax for her. She jokes that on the marching field she looks like a saxophone with a Shakko (hat) and shoes!

See the two Jupiter Saxophones is this picture: http://mysite.verizon.net/res8o1o8/saxes.htm
Warning: These are LARGE picture files so take some time to download.

My personal favorite is a vintage Buescher True Tone from the late 1920’s!

Sorry, the color is off in the pictures. I guess my 6 year old scanner is in need of replacement.

So am I, maybe half an inch more - that's one of the great thing about playing curved neck C-Mels, makes me look like a six-foot-six tenor player............

The only modern sax I play is a basic late 80's Jupiter soprano, amazing intonation and action for the price so I'd half expect the tenor to be the same, doesn't look much - but when I play it I find the sax is often forgotten (just me and the notes...), now that is the mark of a good sax. A bad sax will make you aware of it's presence far too often !

I used to play an ebonite Berg on bari, about 120-1, needed a little edge to go with the beef. Wish, in hindsight, I'd kept the (old Buescher) bari, that was often invisible as well - once it was full of air it just purred along like a V8 ! I often wondered whether it was playing me.......

Yea, those Buescher Baris are great, and suck about as much air as a V8! Getting one full of air is fun!

Yes, it often felt like I was 'topping up' the air supply, instead of specifically blowing for each note. Maybe it was psychological, with all the plumbing (the loop) just in front of the face. Guess playing bass sax is even worse, in that respect.

Bit like the slight time delay on modern midi wind instruments (Akai Ewi etc.), I always felt the need to start blowing just a smidge before everyone else - seemed to work, it was an automatic reflex.... I often used to image a big ball, floating just above the bell - in the airstream - had to keep blowing to keep the damn thing in the air .... (Bari players should really try bagpipes)

I miss playing the bari bottom line on those old soul numbers, if I couldn't be heard I could certainly be felt thro the stage - I used one of those big old 'permanent' air-damped stands, with part strapped to the bell, made switching to/from tenor easier, I could play a quick burst on bari with the tenor still 'dangling' - when we had to swing the horns, the whole stand often went with the bari ! Scary !!! Certainly influenced the size of car, bari + tenor + scaffolding meant small sports cars were out !

Apologies for that trip down memory lane, feel better now (old and knackered, but better...........).

What are forums for?

Discussing relevant topics, not personal sidetracking having nothing to do with the discussion at hand. I'm guilty of it occasionally myself. That doesn't make it right. It's as if some of us are saying "Okay, we talked about you and your dilemma for a few seconds, now let's talk about me, me, me and one of my irrelevent experiences that has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand, and probably no one cares about except ME and a few of my desciples!

Fancy that! I just came to this site on a link from the Aquila Sax site that announces the imminent (sp?) arrival of a New C-MELODY...designed in New Zealand and being built in China. Then, I read all this great stuff about my own one and only horn: The Jupiter Artist Tenor... yes I do love the way it plays, (with my Yamaha C4 MP) - If only I could find a C-Sax that felt and played so well...

Capn M - what forums have you been on that don't drift a little...... ? Bet they're as "dull as ditchwater !" I should have a look back at your old postings (like I have the time ??), so that I can remind you of your meanderings ?

============

Sol - fair play - with the best will in the world, you won't find a C-Sax that "felt and played so well..." as your relatively modern Jupiter Artist tenor because the C-Saxes around at the moment (with maybe a couple of exceptions, like the Vito or the Schmidt) were made in the 20's or early 30's.

But we like 'em anyway. Guess you need to wait for the new (NZ) C-Sax, get those shekels polished and ready.......

alan UK...If you were paying attention to my post, I stated that I was guilty of it. But that still doesn't make it right. Because of your attempt at justifying it, you are just stretching it out and proving my point. the fact that I admitted my "meanderings" makes your mentioning of it redundant and pointless. I refuse to comment any further because you are sucking me into doing it now!

On another note, has anyone seen the gold plate Buescher on eBay? It's at over $500 with two days left! I want it, but at the same time I've been cured of GAS.

Muggers. We are all guilty of drifting off topic (this thread is currently talking GAS); you are less guilty than I though.
Probably the most "On Topic" forum is SOTW.
Talking about GAS (here we go), my mouthpiece GAS was cured when I found Colletto mouthpieces....at least, cured until I find something even more suitable. Half the reason for GAS is our (certainly my), indecision of how we wish to sound at any time, plus the different music styles; today, do I wish to sound like Clarence Clemmens or Ben Webster?
Sorry Muggers, gone off topic again. :-))

OhBOY, Would I love to have that gold c-mel on ebay. But being cured of GAS just like Sam (IE)(same reason) I guess I will have to let the quite rare and beautiful c-mel go to someone else.

SC, you probably do not want a C-Mel for your son if he is playing in school bands or the like. See, I tried to get back on topic!

Of course, talking of new saxophones, I would like a C-Bass. I think that is a good niche between Eb Bari and BBb Bass! Sorry, off topic again...
