So yet another hurricane is on its way, this time hurricane Rita. People are heeding the warnings and moving away from the areas at risk. I've seen reported on the news 100 mile road jams; so many more vehicles pumping out greenhouse gases to pollute the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. When is the American Administration going to take notice and sign the Kyoto Agreement to reduce carbon immissions? For many years America has been burying its head in the sand and now it is reaping the whirlwind. Do you think Americans know who to blame for this mess?

Of course, global warming is not just a problem on EARTH. MARS is experiencing Global Warming, so is Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. Will the Kyoto protocol help them?

Besides, the USA is not the only producer of greenhouse gases. Why blame the USA when the burning of tropical rain forests in Brazil dump more CO2 into the atmosphere than the USA produces? What about all of the wild fires that devastated California during the last couple of years? Or the wild fires in the entire western half of the USA. Will the Kyoto protocol stop them?

Perhaps the volcanoes need to sign the protocol because of their massive pollution.

Stop blaming the USA. This is a world problem, not an American problem. Or perhaps the heavy industry of the US is what killed the Black Forest in Germany?

It is too late to stop the trends that are happening. We are DOOMED!

dream on. The idea that most people have of global warming is an utter falacy. Sure, green house emissions can't help, but global warming and freezing is a natural process going back millions of years. We are just coming out of an ice age, so naturally, things are going to get warm. The water shortage in lake meade was blamed on global warming until it was realized that the last 100 years have had unnatural amounts of rain - a pattern that turns up once every few thousand years. It is a ntural process of warming and freezing. in another some thousand years, thngs are going get cold again.

Wade, also perhaps we should tell cows to stop releasing gases from their intestines.

More gas (petrol) available to those poor people on the north bound traffic jams in Texas would have been a sign of at least some planning for a mass exodus by automobile.

I think some of you seem to be going off on a tangent. Global warming, or natural phenomenon, whatever you want to call it, it all seems to be resulting in higher sea levels and more extreme weather. Resulting in more deaths and disruption.....

So would it not be useful to at least listen (with an objective mind) to the arguments ? I'd at least like to leave some kind of habitable world for my granddaughter, most of us old scrotes will be gone in 20-30 years - think about the next generations.

Ken, that isn't the way things work. Gas is not an unlimited resource of it - you can only have so much of it at a time. Even if the government were to subsidize higher gasoline stocks, that doesn't mean that they would get enough. not to mention, that gas can only be pumped so fast. but ok, I guess in the Uk you guys do it where you build a gas station in a matter of hours.

However, it doesn't take a genius to anticipate the need for extra petrol tankers (and breakdown recovery vehicles) pre-positioned at strategic points on an evacuation route with 7-8 lanes of slow moving traffic....

But then we're only Brits, with no idea of how it all happens in the 'real world', eh ? Arf-Arf. Guess more than a few people found just how much gas their gas-guzzlers consumed in slow moving traffic. Maybe there's hope for them yet.

Whilst I disagree with the wholesale burning of the virgin forests of Brazil and Indonesia, and know that this burning pollutes the air and blocks out the sun, they do not cause global warming. What causes global warming and depletion of the Ozone Layer is the burning of fossil fuels, such as petroleum products and coal. Nuclear Power on the other hand does not contribute towards Global Warming. It is true that Venus also experiences Global Warming, this is through volcanic activity on the planet, but the Earth does not experience the kind of volcanic eruptions that are seen on Venus. The United States is responsible for 89% of the total emmission of greenhouse gases, it is therefore responsible for Global Warming. So why do they bury their heads in the sand and blame Brazil? Because it justifies exploitation and teaches people to be resigned to it. It also teaches the religious to be charitable and as it were, provide them with a cheap ticket to heaven.

Yeah, alan thats right, none of you that have been so desperately poisoned by the left (or even radical far right for that matter.) have a clue of how the real world works. look at what Germany is doing right now - you have far left and not so far left, and the entire EU is suffering because they can't make up their mind over something trivial.

I think if I were to answer you we'd be going a long way off the topic, but what a profitable faith it is for an insignificant minority that enjoys wealth and power, whilst the majority constantly suffers deprivation and want and at the same time teaches us to bear uncomplainingly the woes of hell on earth, in the hope of an alleged paradise in the skies? The helplessness that people feel in their daily struggle in life inevitably generates a belief in a better life after death and gives rise to a belief in gods, devils, miricales etc.

Guwapo - that is not what I meant. What I meant was which: That people generally don't think that they can just buy their way into heaven, if they are really into their religion. The major exception is mormonism, which demands that you buy your way into their equivalent of heaven.

Those who want to force the Kyoto Protocol on the USA assume that the USA has done nothing to reduce pollutants. They obviously have not even taken a glance at the reality.

Here in California, the Air Quality Management District (AQMD) and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) have some of the most stringent anti-pollution standards in the WORLD!

Any new car sold in California, and in most of the USA, only puts out about 1/20 the pollution of automobiles built prior to 1972. In fact, the modern pollution controlled automobile in the USA pollutes more just sitting and NOT RUNNING than its engine pollutes while running. This non-engine combustion related pollution is caused by the outgassing of plastics, oils, and fuel in the vehicle.

Factories have stringent pollution controls regulated by the US government. All in all, the USA pollution level is considerably less than it was 40 years ago, even though we have more industry and automobiles. In most cases, the USA's anti-pollution laws EXCEED the Kyoto protocol. Do you really want us to lower our standards?

Ozone depletion is primarily caused by Chlorofluorocarbons used in air-conditioners. New (last 15 years or so) USA regulations have banned this substance for use in Air-Conditioners. As a result, more expensive air-conditions have been built using more expensive gases. This is a price that American consumers willingly pay for cleaner air. Additionally, gas recovery systems are now mandatory for any air-conditioner service so that the used gases do not dump into the atmosphere.

Finally, the cars running out of gas in the evacuation from Texas were assumed to be “gas-guzzlers”. Again, this is a false assumption. Try this experiment; Fill your gas tank at the nearest fuel station. Then park you car at home, start your engine and let it idle for 14 hours while running the air-conditioner (if so equipped). Finally, go back to the fuel station and fill your tank again. Now calculate your gas mileage. For example:

Assume that your tank has a capacity of 16 gallons. Your engine at idle consumes 2 gallons of gasoline per hour. The nearest fuel station is 2 miles from your house. The experiment would go as follows:

1. Tank filled at station.
2. Car driven home (2.0 miles)
3. Car left to idle in driveway.
4. Eight hours into the experiment the fuel runs out. Push/tow car to fuel station and refill. Add 16 gallons to the fuel used register.
5. Car driven home (2.0 miles)
6. Car left to idle in driveway for an additional six hours to get the total of 14 hours.
7. Car driven to fuel station (2.0 miles)
8. Fuel tank topped off with 12 gallons of fuel; 12 gallons added to the fuel used register.
9. Mileage calculated at 6.0 miles/28 gallons = 0.21 Miles per gallon.
10. Now assume that this was the actual 100-mile evacuation from hurricane Rita and that you made the entire distance using the same 28 gallons of fuel. This would give you a fuel economy of 3.57 miles per gallon.

Finally, assume that you have a super efficient gasoline automobile that is rated for 50 miles per gallon on the highway and it burns only 1 gallon per hour at idle. These cars typically have 12-gallon tanks, so the experiment would go like this:

1. Tank filled at station.
2. Car driven home (2.0 miles)
3. Car left to idle in driveway.
4. Twelve hours into the experiment the fuel runs out. Push/tow car to fuel station and refill. Add 12 gallons to the fuel used register.
5. Car driven home (2.0 miles)
6. Car left to idle in driveway for an additional two hours to get the total of 14 hours.
7. Car driven to fuel station (2.0 miles)
8. Fuel tank topped of with 2 gallons of fuel, 2 gallons added to the fuel used register.
9. Mileage calculated at 6.0 miles/14 gallons = 0.43 Miles per gallon.
10. Now assume that this was the actual 100-mile evacuation from hurricane Rita and that you made the entire distance using the same 14 gallons of fuel. This would give you a fuel economy of 7.14 miles per gallon.

Your only hope would have been to have a hybrid gasoline/electric engine that shut off when the vehicle was stopped. Also, you would have to turn off the air-conditioner. In the sun-drenched evacuation route with 90-degree temperatures the interior of the car would quickly heat to 110 degrees plus even with the windows open. Hope you brought plenty of water!

Basically, this evacuation of 2.7 million people in only three days is the first evacuation of a modern city in such short order. All in all it went fairly well. Theories were proven wrong and will need to be modified. Fortunately, many lives were probably saved by the evacuation; even though some were lost because of the evacuation. Disaster preparation for individuals, municipalities, and countries has been severely tested during the last month. As tragic as these disasters are, the larger tragedy will be if we learn nothing, or do nothing with the lessons taught.

Are you ready to live for two or three weeks without ANY services (food, water, sewer, fuel, or electricity)? If not, you will be found on the list of victims of the next disaster to hit your area. If so, you have a much better chance of survival. There are no guarantees!

Consider this: While the Americans may be 5% of the world's population, and they may consume 30% of the world's resources, don't they generate about 70% of the world's wealth?

Will the wonder-drug that saves your Mother's life likely come from Finland (no offence to the Finns, just trying to make a point of logic)?

Will the Fr*nch Army save you from marauding foriegn invaders any time soon?

Will the German people grab their credit cards, fire up their web browsers, and send you almost a billion USD - overnight - when your town is smashed by a tsunami?

You know how to discern the 'winners' and 'losers'? Hint: The losers are the ones pointing at the winners and whining "Thats not fair!"

I apologise for making this my first post, and promise to try to add something of value to the other topics in the very near future. Consider this: While the Americans may be 5% of the world's population, and they may consume 30% of the world's resources, don't they generate about 70% of the world's wealth? Will the wonder-drug that saves your Mother's life likely come from Finland (no offence to the Finns, just trying to make a point of logic)? Will the Fr*nch Army save you from marauding foriegn invaders any time soon? Will the German people grab their credit cards, fire up their web browsers, and send you almost a billion USD - overnight - when your town is smashed by a tsunami? You know how to discern the 'winners' and 'losers'? Hint: The losers are the ones pointing at the winners and whining "Thats not fair!"
