Golly, what a busy few months it's been over here!

I must confess that I had temporarily forgotten about this good corner of the online world. Browsing the threads, it seems that I've missed a lot more ranting, raving, and specific lunacy than was previously the norm here.

How have you all been? Did you miss me badly, lo these many months?

Stacey...Welcome back, you have been missed. I think that the ranting & raving has not changed in essence....it's just that you have been associating with sane people in the meantime.
Dean...Nothing wrong with Res-O-Pads..great idea, once you have learned to tweak the diameters of the cups to obtain the necessary interference fit...OK, I KNOW that it should not be that way around, but nothing is perfect :-))

I'm sure, somewhere, an enterprising repairer has designed a neat little 'rotating wedge' to just flare the cup rims enough to facilitate that....

Alan...If, as would be necessary, to accommodate small 12mm cups and 40mm, the taper would be too long; unless it had removable, trunkated sections. Nothing is impossible but careful tweaking with a small pair of pliers is cheaper than a Ł20,000 machine which would be used infrequently.

Lewis _ had in mind small angled home-made hand-tool(s), that would sit in the cup, with leather or cork-faced surfaces to avoid damage to the metal and finish.

Alan...I see what you mean, but as pad sizes range from 5mm to 71mm a full set whould represent quite an investment. I will stick to the pliers if you do not mind :-))

AND...some cups required tweaking inwards, to REDUCE the diameter....begining to get expensive!

Appreciated, I womder what Conn used in the factory ? Probably a press ? From what I see in old pics, there were lots of BIG leather faced mallets around.

As we used to say, the smaller the hammer, the better the technician.....

It is said that Etore Bugatti would sack anyone found with a hammer in his toolbox! Sometimes Alan, one thump with a big hammer does far less damage than several with a small one ....mass x velocity squared & all that.
I guess that the large leather mallets were for "hand hammering" the brass sheet around the mandrel....R&C still work like that; certainly cuts down on capital investment.

Those evil Resopads have been removed and ritually burned. The C-mel is back to plain old pads with flat metal resos and some normalish adhesive.

Strangely, a year after the overhaul, all of the pads leak again. I don't know if it's the pads, the tech who did the job, or the utter lack of humidity in Arizona. I'm about to box it up and send it to the guy who recently overhauled my Mark 7 alto, and did a fine job at a low price. A few tweaks by him, and my C-mel will be glorious, as well as never-dented, in a new case, with a Morgan mpc, and nearly 100% intact silver...

I've been hanging out with decidedly "messed up" people, at least one or two of them. Most of you are quite sane by comparison. And it's been a year of big "life replanning" (I'm in my late 30s, so of course it's about that "time"). Nothing foolish, just lots of change for the better.

Arizona is awful. It's almost enough to make me miss England, and it's definitely enough to make me miss my home in Indiana. Three more years, and we're moving back (to Indiana, not to England).

Alan, why the name change? Witness protection program?

Stacey, no I'm not a Jehova's Witness, just a rambling agnostic. The name change is to tie in with my new website at cmelodysax.co.uk, a blatant act of c-melody commercialism.....

I also name-changed to cmelodysax at SOTW, although a guy can go grey waiting for a new topic there ! Makes this forum look decidedly hyperactive. Like Dubya on additives.

I always think of Stacey Keach when I see your name, but then you've never been banged up in Reading Jail, have you ? Confused ?

A rambling agnostic... ok. I guess I'm a wandering Roman Catholic, with Orthodox Tendencies and a streak of Inclusivism. I think officially that just makes me "a bad Catholic", but I'm not sure.

I may well have been wrong in my enthusiasm for resos. I am continually fiddling about with minor leaks & the leak light is permanently plugged in. I think that the pads are moving slightly....shall give them a week or so to "settle in" (what a vain hope) & then shellac them...as you all advised me in the first place :-((
By the way Stacey...no-one, apart from Oscar Wilde, ever stopped at Reading....it is one of those places built to get to other places. We have a village around here called Littleham, & whatever direction I travel when leaving my home town, there is always a sign saying "Littleham 1 mile".....very strange.
