If President Abraham Lincoln went to the site of the World Trade Center attacks today, what might he say? The following is a modification of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The changes are minimal, updated mostly to reflect our modern world rather than the world of 1863. Yet the thoughts are so timely… Ladies and Gentlemen, The President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln:
Eleven score and 10 years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation: conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great war against terror . . .testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated . . . can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war.
We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate . . .we cannot consecrate . . . we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men and women, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.
It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work, which they who fought here have thus far so nobly, advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us . . .that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion . . . that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain . . . that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom . . . and that government of the people . . .by the people . . .for the people . . . shall not perish from the earth.

Unfortunately if you want freedom you have to defend it sometimes, that's a fact of freedom, or you get others to defend freedom for you. The alternative is to live in a dictatorship that practices perverted science?Captain Beeflat

Yes, regrettably, under the historic system, one does have to defend freedom sometimes.
Life under a benign dictatorship is a possible alternative.
Anything must be better than the current mob rule (democracy) where semi anthropoid, power crazy cretins are elected.
Probably the best system would be a meritocracy.ukebert

There are advantages to a meritocracy, and ddisadvantages, same as any political system. I know not which would be the better.alan (uk)

This is getting quite deep - isn't a "Social Darwinist" someone who would eliminate all whom he decrees as "unfit for purpose" - and then ironically kill himself ?

I am delighted to relate that I do not have a clue what "Social Darwinism" is... I do know however that I dislike titles & labels.
Common Sense rules. It is Politics & Religion which has resulted in most calamities...neither of which is a science.

Wow, this is a REALLY OLD thread that has suddenly come back to life! This is one place where having the year on the post would really help.
