Well, it seems that this is going to be a DRY year. Currently it is 87F degrees (30C) with an expected high of 95F (35C) with relative humidity of 9% (Yes, that is NINE percent)!

This is when reeds and chops dry out immediately if not sooner. Fortunately, synthetic reeds helps with the dry reed problem. For the chops, a nice cool (not cold unless you want a headache) bottle of water for a quick gulp between notes will help keep the whistle moist.

An intonation? At 95F Degrees? Are you kidding me? We are lucky if the instruments even play.

Sorry, just getting a little HOT under the collar on this WINTER day.

Did I mention that we have only had 2.25" (12.15cm) of rain this season? Of course, after the hard freeze two weeks ago (okay, it was only 22F (-5C) not that cold for most of you), my plants have all but died. Guess that's why they call it a desert! Even 50% of my cacti have perished from the freeze!

Do not worry about the heat...it's the rattlesnakes you have to worry about. I know that I have said this to you before but I simply could not entertain living anywhere with poisonous snakes. Good thing, in retrospect that your plants have died...less cover for the snakes; nature knows best.

9% humidity?! Good grief. It's 42% according to the hydrometer beside me, which is a little low for the room (it has a piano in it).

Well, in March I'm wearing shorts and a t-shirt.... Went to a funeral yesterday without a jacket, and the garden is budding like mad.

So, no matter how much people debate global warming versus shifting climate patterns, there is very definitely a climate change in progress - whatever the cause.

The Dorset weather was more mixed a decade back - we seem to now have more hot spells and mini-monsoon weeks, with storms in between. It's quite evident too, that the 'flash' rain doesn't always benefit the water table.

Wade - for your very dry climate I have a vision of a sax with attached water bottle, and a thin catheter (tube) running right up to the tip of the mouthpiece. When you take a breath, after a phrase or three, in comes a trickle of water, to replace the outgoing moisture. Before you all get technical, yes, there would be a non-return valve in the tube, to avoid complications in the blowing cycle......

Toxic, from another posting, do you consider me one of the four who 'permanently pontificate' ? However - sadly the coffers are nearly empty, so, nice as this is, time spent at the keyboard may have to be a little bit more productive in future.

Captain Beeflat - In the 18 years I have lived in the Inland Empire I have yet to see a rattlesnake. My wife thinks she heard one once, but is not sure. I have see red racers (man are those FAST snakes). One day my wife called me because our 90 pound (40 kg) dog was laying on a snake at our back door. Turned out to be a female garter snake! So rattlers are not a problem (unless you include the two-legged variety).

When all was said and done, yesterday's high was 95F (35C) with 7% humidity. Average high for this date is 72F (22C). Right now, at 8:17AM local time it is 51F (10.5C) with humidity at 41%. This will help the firefighters stop the two wildfires burning in the area. Also, my pianos will benefit from a little more moisture.

Yet, all my reeds (all synthetic) are having no problem. Now I need to get to work on Alan (UK)'s moisture enhancement device for dry climate saxophonists!

Be Cool and have some Iced Coffee!

Bb - Devon would definitely be too slow for Red Racers - so no worry.....

Wade - I was joking, but thinking about it.... Possibly a little Scotch in with the water tho' - that would increase sales...... ;-))
