Hello-- Looking for a Holton soprano sax mouthpiece. This may or may not be marked "Holton". They are silver colored metal and are covered by a red or brown hard rubber coating. Will pay honest dollars. Thanks!jazzbug1@aol.com

jb1 - How do you intend to describe yourself on ebay ? Do you think you'll reach reserve ?

Arf-arf... (Sorry I just couldn't resist, shouldn't give me feeds like that, you know we all love you !)

A customer of mine has a Goldbeck metal for soprano that is somewhat worked on and a bit of tip knock. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will hook you up.

Yes, Alan--- My wife will keep the mothpieces as an investment and put me on Ebay, probably under junk Studebaker parts. I knew you would fall into that line. Are we running out of sax topics?
Its difficult for me to think of new threads. Hey- Was that a promise or a thread?

(So, jb1, if you want 'sax chat'...)

Talking about Goldbeck mouthpieces, did they engrave tenor ones with a 'B' ? I have one (came in on a C-mel) with what looks like either an "8" or a "B" engraved/punched on the side.

Also engraved 'Goldbeck & Co -Makers - Chicago ILL. Pat. Feb 10 1920 '

No way is the very close tip opening any kind of 8 ! Quite small in size, closer to a big alto mpc - almost certainly not a C-mel, although it does appear faced for C-Mel/Tenor reeds. So, could the '8' be a 'B' (for Bb) ?

Plays like a windsock.... About the same volume level. 8-))

Alan-- I had a Goldbeck Tenor. That marking is a "B" for Bb, I assume. The tip was equal to the usual #3 of the time (quite small). I play a Goldbeck C soprano, Bb soprano, alto, and baritone as my regular mouthpieces. They produce a vintage sound, but with a very metal edge, and remind me of the first Otto Links. The Goldbeck chamber is somewhat smaller looking than the ususal boat horns of the 20s, hence the more modern (for me) sound. The tenor mouthpiece was a serious disappointment and sounded awful. Just a honker, with no character at all, like a student plastic model. I sold it on Ebay for $110, as they are rare. I would commit an immoral act, such as becomming a Communist spy, if I could get my hands on a Goldbeck bass sax mouthpiece, but I'm not sure they made one, as it was not in a catalog I once saw.

jb1 - thanks for that, maybe I'll commit the (what I now presume is a tenor, as it has the 8/B) Goldbeck to ebay.

On the subject of bass saxes, I just put up a topic on my blog, about a Dutch bass sax player called Bert Brandsma - who has a late Conn Bass, and an earlier Martin bass which turns out to be a Conn stencil (as Martin didn't make their own basses...) - grrr...

Some lovely playing tho', he is well worth a listen, playing both, although not simultaneously !

I have to routinely clean the "bassturds" from my case. Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Jazzbug1,

I have a Goldbeck bass 'piece here. It is larger than my Conn bari 'piece from the same period. It plays flat on bari but is pretty good on the basses (Conn and Buescher) that I have tried it on.

Jeff-- Please advise details to jazzbug1@aol.com
Thanks. I also will be sending some Conn parts to gold plate this fall, as I have heard of your skills.
